About this Deal:
In New Condition this is rated 4.9 out of 5 stars from 87 reviews.
Condition Notes:
Open Box merchandise are products that have been purchased and delivered to other customers, and then returned to Monoprice. Due to the varying quality of products returned, we make every attempt to supply the original accessories for Open Box products. However, Monoprice only guarantees that you will receive the product itself, accessories may or may not be included. Bear in mind that your open box product may not contain cables, adapters, manuals, CDs, drivers, etc. Additionally, the product may exhibit cosmetic imperfections as a result of its having been previously opened.
It's a great deal at 179, it's an AMAZING deal at 99.
I have had various portable headphone amps (fiio e17, dragonfly, that brookstone 20 dollar super special one) that were all decent but the monolith is MUCH better.
I currently have mine paired with a pair of Senheiser hd560S cans and I'm very happy. The sound is the best I've gotten out of them. (I know, it may be time to upgrade cans)
The Dirac thing is pretty cool the "speaker like" imaging is nice, but it seems to "sterilize" the sound even more than it already is. I have to play with it some more.
I think you are talking about the 887 dac/amp combo that was posted a little while ago. This is just an amp and doesn't have a dac or Dirac, although it has considerably more output power.

I think this disclaimer from Monoprice is worth noting prior to any purchase:

You're right, man! I just realized that this is an amp only, even tho it has the better amp than the prior deal. Thanks for looking out.
So my current setup is:
AMP: Shiit Magni Heresy
DAC: Shiit Modi Modi 3
Headphones: beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO
If I only care about sound quality and not how loud it can get is this going to sound any better over the Magni it would replace?
Side note I am getting random buzzing every so often out of my current setup that I can't figure out where it is coming from...
You won't be able to perceive a difference in sound quality between the heresy and thx aaa amp. However, buzzing is frequently caused by ground loops. This aaa unit would get you one step closer to a balanced signal path which is one potential solution to ground loops.
This unit is an absolute bargain at any price under $200.

It has outperformed far past any audible transparency and can pretty much drive anything out there. Don't read just buy.
