I've been doing software for nearly 30 years, MS in CS to boot. I looked through the table of contents and would not recommend this for those beginning to learn. The best way to learn is to pick a language you think you would like and start making software with it. When you outgrow that language pick another and rinse and repeat. Once you get a feel for a few languages then start learning data structures and algorithms.

There's a million and two awesome intro to programming courses available for free on the internet. FreeCodeCamp will teach you everything in this book. My personal favorite intro book is Learn To Program by Chris Pine. Happy coding folks.

It sure seems like just (1) choosing a language and (2) starting to make software with it skips a number of crucial steps. What about actually learning the language, for example?

Okay...so what would those in the know recommend for a starting point here? In my current job ?I do a LOT of Excel work, although it's mostly based in formulas (typically, I create a lot of files/tools for myself and other teams that have been in use for a long time) and have dabbled in writing macros with a very basic (pun intended?) background in BASIC programming (circa 1996ish) from a couple classes in high school and college.

Good recos for improving my macro-writing abilities? Next step to get into something a little more complex? I honestly don't even know what would make sense...I probably need to provide more info too huh? Based on what I want to do? And I have no idea what that is Big Grin

I appreciate the comments, but i would suggest to go to the amazon reviews, hit most recent then read your 1 & 2 star review comments. The kindle format (font size) of this book, unworkable instructions, as well as maybe not updated will make it a pass for me.

How are you going to make those short little programs without having learned any of the language, such as syntaxes?
How do you normally learn new things?

Depends on what is. Languages? I start with the writing system, common cognates/loanwords, and basic sentence construction elements, such as linking verbs. What I don't do is pick a language and, with no further steps, immediately construct sentences. That'd be an absurd expectation.

Weird, I myself learned how to read by just picking up a medical journal and just going for it. I never learned basic shorts sentences like most children such as "See Spot run", " See Spot jump" cause using those sort of short sentences certainly would have been absurd!

1.
First language acquisition for a child isn't at all the same as learning a new language as an adult.

2. What does "going for it" mean? Did you immediately start constructing new sentences without bothering to learn any of the language?

I did the same thing when I learned French, I didn't start off by learning short common sentences like "Mon crayon est grand." or "Mon crayon est jaune. I just grabbed the nearest copy of La Guerre Et La Paix and went for it! Because starting off simple easy to understand basic sentences would just be absurd!!!!

Are you saying the learn to program book is not good or the slick deal book is not good?

30 years ago, that will be Pascal, Fortran and Cobol, that bring back a good memory.
Bruh, more like PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, C++. This guy wasn't programming in the 70's

I am a very senior developer with experience like what you are claiming. Even for an experienced developer with solid foundation in one programming language, learning additional language may take anything from few weeks to months depending on his knowledge and skills. For a beginner, the learning curve will be much steeper. It may take significantly longer to grasp the fundamentals and gain proficiency in one language. So, if any beginners are reading this, please ignore OP's advice. Pick one language. Practice, practice and practice, gain proficiency and become a great developer.

Most advanced OO languages are very similar. JAVA, C, C#.. you name it. The core of any programming is data modeling and algorithm. You need to have solid mathematical background for advanced programming, a college degree in CS is really should be mandatory. Why software is so buggy these days? I am telling you a secret - it's because the developers these days do not have solid foundation, most of them do not even have a BS degree let alone in CS. Blame corporate America whose goal is lower cost, not quality.

Is the other way around not efficient? Usually data structures and algorithms are a course for CS majors or lectures are available online.
