Not really, this is meant to more preserve the existing carbonation. I mean, you could try to force carbonate liquid in this, but its going to take a long time.

I'd imagine that this is mainly used for going to a brewery and getting beer straight from the tap and then keeping it fresh. Regular growlers, the second you open it the clock is ticking on it going flat. This you could keep it fresh for a long time.

I'm tempted on the 128oz version to take my ntiro cold brew with me when camping.
I always wanted one of these but I can't justify $80
1gal (128oz) is also on sale for $104

So this doesn't carbonate a beverage (like a Sodastream), it basically pushes out an already carbonated beverage (like a primed keg)?

what's the usage for this? why wouldn't you just buy cans of beer or soda and keep it cool with ice? is there something else that should be carbonated?

A couple years ago a seen an older gentleman show up to the brewery with something similar but with what seemed like copper lines (not stainless) and said his daughter gave it to him for his birthday. I told it looked nice and he said he loved it and worked great with beer. I've been intrigued ever since but never looked into. I like going to different breweries so might be a good investment.

It can do both, although using the small co2 cartridges you may have to use multiple to carbonate anything.

these have carbonation cartridges tho. So excuse my ignorance, is that still just for preserving? I'm befuddled with this item.

Yes they do.
When brewing beer it takes a few days to achieve correct carbonation by just forcing Co2 in from the top. You can speed it up by chilling the beer down to storage temp and laying a keg on its side and rolling it back and forth for a few hours, or use a diffusion stone (usually takes overnight with the stone).

In this case, most likely your beer will come from a brewery already carbonated to the correct amount and you are really using the Co2 cartridge to push the beer out through the faucet.

You "could" carbonate inside the uKeg by flipping it upside down and shaking it a bunch, but its not really what its made for.
