100 year CD paying 4.75%

-10 Deal Score

Walden Mutual Bank (Concord, New Hampshire) has announced that they will be offering an FDIC insured 100-year CD paying 4.75% with various options including non amortized interest (i.e., the interest pays out each year). 10-year interest penalty for early withdrawal.

Not my personal couple of tea, but could be part of a balanced portfolio.

10 year penalty for early withdrawal? So if you pull out in the first decade you loose all interest?

The real question is, will this bank I never heard of still be around in 100 years?

The whole point of investing in insured accounts is to have funds you can pull rather quickly if something happens. At a 10 year buy in, it defeats the whole purpose...you're better off investing in a high yields savings where at least you aren't penalized for withdraws.

I've got a 100-year CD at 50% I will sell you. You can't withdraw for 100 years though, okay? I may or may not answer the door when you come knocking.

This really screams as a scam. The FDIC should look into this bank, to determine how legitimate and financially secure. If you look at the FDIC website, they opened just last year Oct'22... and has one branch. Yeah, this bank will be around in 100 years... if you believe that, I got some individually numbered limited edition crypto NFT lithograms I'm selling 50% off... limited 5,000 per person. Hurry before they sell out.

Yep. A lot of uninformed fools. Fiat currencies always collapse. Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) will replace. Expiring currency. Control everyone's thoughts, actions, ownership, employment. As it is currently done in China. All portfolios absorbed into the CBDC. Pensions, social security or retirement accounts all confiscated and absorbed into the BORG.

Obviously, for those wondering if it's going to be around in a hundred years, the option to not amortize the interest: that is to have the interest paid out to you every year,* would be the right choice. That's why I highlighted it.

With the FDIC guarantee (which will pay your principal if the bank fails in the next cebtury) this is basically an FDIC guaranteed annuity.

as to whether the FDIC would be worried about this, that may depend on their ALM. if the bank has a lot of long-term loans that can't be prepaid that it may just be the credit risk of those borrower.

* "and automatically withdraw the interest penalty free on an ongoing basis without ever touching the principal"
