I had one for a trip to Maui but returned it. Underwater performance is terrible. The screen constantly thinks it's getting touched and changes settings. The video quality and cutover line between the two cameras was always an issue. I wish I would have done more research on underwater performance.

As far as software goes, it's really smart at some things and really dumb at others. In 360 mode if you do a time-lapse it will lock its orientation of video to whatever angle you were looking in the video but no way to tell it to orient north at all times or use a focus point to hold the angle like if you want to video out the front of your car. When you turn the camera stays the same angle so you go from videoing straight forward to not staring at your fender and you have to manually adjust the entire time. Very cumbersome.

I picked this deal up a month ago. I like the camera a lot and it's fairly easy to use once you know what you're doing. I mostly shot 360 stuff for VR (so no reframing). This kit is fairly good, but you may wish to consider buying it piecemeal.

The camera comes with a small sleeve that won't fit with the lens cover (so either light protection for the whole thing, or good lens protection with nothing on the screen). I don't find I use the lens cover. The memory card is rather small and I got a larger one (so I can do a whole trip and not need to change). The extra battery is nice but not a necessity. Overall, you may wish to get it piecemeal and get the stuff you need/want. That said, Costco is solid, to that may be worth a little extra in the end anyway.

I have the older models of these products (X1 & GP6). I am probably not the typical user or the right person to comment on the "action" aspect of these cameras, since I use these for family vacations. I think the phone can do most of what GoPro can do for vacation photos and videos. My preference for GoPro is only when I can mount it and let it run for awhile, especially if we're out in the water. I prefer the Insta360 mostly because I can capture the "moment" better, where I can see my family reactions along with the event at the same time. You also do not have to aim and just hold the camera. It's just much easier to just let the thing run and not have to worry about it.

The cons are that pictures and videos from Insta360 are not very sharp and usually look distorted in 2D. Sharing is also very limited. I have to send links to Google Photos or Facebook and explain to people each time they have to scroll around with mouse or fingers. Everyone stares at you when you use the Insta360 on a stick. Even retracted, it looks like a club and I had an old lady freaked out on me once. I get flack from security at museums when using the stick, which is when it's the best use for the Insta360. So I've basically given up carrying the stick and just mount a screw and strap. There's a close up of me in every picture, but at least I can use it without someone harassing me about the stick.

Probably a different-than-most use case, but I have the X2 (previous version of this) and I use it with a mount on my motorcycle to act as my dashcam since it can capture both in front and behind me in one shot. It's been a cheap way to have a little extra insurance. I don't know if I would buy this kit at $400+, but I do like the platform and would recommend looking at the cheaper X1 or X2 if you only want to dabble

Gopros are much better for water sports with better image quality

I have the Insta360 X2 and a buddy of mine has the GoPro Max. We both use it to record our rides and one big issue with the GoPro Max was the size and form factor of the thing and how his mount would droop due to its weight and size. Form factor also became an issue when considering wind resistance (the camera can be rotated so that it will not act as a wind sail, but you risk the video stitch landing on something you care about, in his case, he wanted forward and back). Its become such an issue that he stopped using his while I continue to use mine.

Colors appeared to be truer on the GoPro Max while the X2 made the colors a bit more vivid. GoPro uses their action cam mount rather than a 1/4 camera mount. This can be disadvantageous for the GoPro when wanting to use an invisible selfie stick as any tilt can result in the stick appearing in the video. The GoPro's mount can be replaced to have a 1/4 camera mount built-in.

Side note: that 64gb microsd card is tiny for the amount of data the camera can generate. Factor in another $30-50 for a 256 or 512gb sd card. Insta360 recommends V30 class speeds.

I'll give my perspective on this camera… for reference I have a GoPro hero 7 & 8, dji action 2 and this insta 360 x3.
I've used GoPros forever and they have served me well but I recently bought the x3 on a open box deal and been having a blast experimenting with it. Editing has a small learning curve with reframing and changing the camera angle but this camera paired with the regular short selfie stick and the extended 10' stick are pretty magical. I haven't used it in water but when researching it there are quite a few complaints about it getting water in it. The camera is supposed to be waterproof to like 10 feet but I would get the dive case for it if I planned on using it in the water to be safe.
Know that the resolution is 5.4K but that is split between both lenses so really you aren't getting 5.4K. Also the lenses stick out and are easily damaged so plan on buying a set of glass lens covers. If you damage the lens you have to send the camera in and spend a good bit of money to get one replaced

My advice would probably be if you are someone that likes tinkering and editing videos and making good quality videos get this camera. If you just want to use it once or twice a year on your family vacation and want to keep it simple get a GoPro…

I have both. I love my X3. I got it for a trip to Egypt. I could use it with a 3m selfie stick and see places the public was not allowed like roped off rooms or simulate drone footage as I'm doing a camel ride around the pyramids. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. Keep in mind the 5.7k filming is for the WHOLE 360 footage. So just one view is more like 1080p. But the 360 filming is great. You shoot it and then you can go back and reframe what you want to focus on. It captures everything around you. It's very cool. With that said, their customer service is quite lacking, especially if you use it under water. I've seen WAY to many people use their camera under water (one of the things it's advertised for) and get water damage, only to have Insta say it was user error and not provide repairs unless you bought the extended warranty. Not cool. There also seems to be less quality control than GoPro (lenses misaligned, one lens not in sync with the other, etc. But if you get it from Costco, you will know something is wrong right away and can exchange it for a new one. You also have to baby the camera since the two lenses stick out. Don't let it fall or tip over, or you risk scratching/cracking the lenses. A GoPro will do a better job capturing a single view. But the 360 aspect for filming and pictures is amazing. Do I regret my purchase? Not at all. Do I use both GoPro and Insta? Yes. If GoPro updated their 360 camera and I had to choose which to get, I'd go with GoPro in a heartbeat.
