Keep in mind, to get the best out of the bike you probably need to pay for the "Peloton" like service Echelon provides through the app. I never paid for the service so I can't give my opinion.
The app (connects over bluetooth) does have a "Freestyle ride" mode where you can see the bike's residence level, pedaling cadence, output (watts), distance, and speed (mph) without paying anything additional. But what you see is just basic info. You can't manage the resistance level unless you are connected to the app over bluetooth. This was fine for me, but know what you are getting into. For $400 you are just getting the bike, for the full experience you probably want to pay for the Echelon monthly service.
