Make sure to use distilled water. Tap water can introduce some nasty stuff into nasal cavity.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends purchasing distilled or sterile water, or using tap water that has been boiled for at least one minute and then cooled."
I use pre-boiled water from a dispenser (Zojirushi) and then add distilled water to bring it to the right temp.
"...don't use table salt, which has too many additives"
I use non-iodized Morton salt. And a little goes a long way…it's easy to overdo it and just get a burning sensation. Err on the side of less.

wouldnt using non-sterile salt be a risk as well?

Bought one a while back. While I am not an everyday user, this thing is a lifesaver when youre completely plugged up like during a cold. I second the use of distilled or boiled water. About 30 seconds in the microwave is perfect for me. Too hot doesn't work either.

Not to defend Florida just to advise, they said Fl, Tx, and the warm southern states.

I use pickling salt and it works great.
