Been this price for a while now. I checked last week. I'm holding out for Prime Days.

I'm pretty sure the quest 3 is better in every way than this one. $500 starting price when it launches

a quest 3 paired with quest pro controllers will probably get you the best of both worlds for most practical purposes.

If you can hold out, I'd wait for the Quest 3 later this year which will inherit most of the Pro's features for $499. Meta has already confirmed that the Quest 3 will have a better SoC, GPU, and higher resolution display than the Pro. Only reason to purchase the Pro at this point is if you either need it right now, or face and eye tracking are must-have features for you.

I think the controller tracking is also better on Quest Pro as well as likely better quality feel and has a charging stand.

The Quest 3 screen will have higher resolution, but I'm not sure if it is better.

Totally agreed. To clarify, I wasn't suggesting the Quest 3 will be the better headset overall. Meta will presumably keep selling both headsets and keep some features exclusive to the Pro to differentiate it as the more "premium" model.

However, the Quest 3 is poised to offer mostly comparable features (minus eye and face tracking) for $499. For the average XR consumer, the Quest 3 will provide much better bang for the buck.

I'm frankly wondering if Quest Pro will serve as a poor man's Apple Vision Pro and be discontinued by Meta. I don't think the user base is large enough to get any significant amount of specialized software.

It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised–Quest Pro has unfortunately flopped when you compare sales against the Quest 2. I think Meta's biggest mistakes were not upgrading the internal specs much from the Quest 2, and marketing it solely for enterprise usage. None of Meta's apps are exclusive to the Pro either, even though some offer enhanced experiences via facial tracking.

With the Quest 3 slated to get an improved CPU and GPU, the Pro becomes an even tougher sell with its older chipset. Meta has also confirmed Quest 3 will have better color passthrough capabilities than the Pro, so I have a feeling it will cannibalize Quest Pro sales.

Less and less reason to get a Quest Pro....

They should have just made a Quest 3 Pro with facial/eye tracking instead and charge a few hundred bucks more instead.

Agreed, that would be a much better value proposition. For me, eye and face tracking are nice-to-haves at this point. While Meta promised more realistic avatars (with legs!) are on the way, we're still stuck with very basic cartoon avatars so those tracking features are more of a novelty. However, if Meta baked eye tracking features into their GUI similar to what Apple's doing, then I could justify the spend for a theoretical Quest 3 Pro.

The problem is that for GUI similar to Apple, they'll also need body/hand/finger tracking. I suppose they could use the controller, but it's certainly not the same.
