This is an interesting idea and I like to see some innovation in this space. As someone who has installed many RO systems (as well as maintained them..) this does not seem worth the effort. I can see that living in a rental can make using an RO a bit complicated.... however, it is more than do-able.

Get yourself a real RO that should work a heck of a lot better, provide cleaner water, and cost way less in the long term. Learn how to maintain an RO system that can last a lifetime.. Most of my RO systems are 10-15 years plus and still going strong. The only thing that has failed are the bladder tanks and those are swap out parts.

If you do not want to deal with a bladder tank than you can get a 3G plastic jug and put a float value in it. Let the RO system fill it up and then put it in the fridge/etc.

Having a real RO also allows for you to remineralize the water with salts that reduce the potential of your system (body) pulling them out and exchanging them with the somewhat pure RO water.

While also not as good as RO the alternative is to use a drip based system from Berkey. Granted... it does cost more than this system new.

We used kangen in the past. Too expensive for most.. what would you recommend as an alternative

I really do not have a lot of experience with these newer systems since my experience came from the salt water reefing industry; however, my #1 company has always been https://airwaterice.com

I do not recommend companies a lot; however, they just last and the owner is amazing at dealing with the true lifetime warranty. Again, these are true RO systems that you can buy cheap industry standard filters and then customize it as you wish.

Also, many water systems have Chloramine (Chloramine is a disinfectant used to treat drinking water. It is formed by mixing chlorine with ammonia.) in them and these "cheaper" systems will exhaust the GAC quickly and not perform that efficiently. If you do not have that then this is probably okay... catalytic carbon is really the only solution to that and is a bit more costly.

I also do not understand how a single filter can filter out VOCs, Fluoride, and other stuff.

The other issue with these shiny counter top units is the proprietary filters, which usually follow the printer/ink model and cost far more than standard in-line filters.

The problem with this is it takes up so much counter space. its way better to get the ones under the sink.

Just a heads up kangen water is not filtered like RO water is, if you're connecting it to the sink you're just drinking "electric" tap water. Yes there's a filter in the kangen, but it's not like these.
And since you can afford what's " too expensive for most", id recommend a tankless RO for you, more expensive but really nice and easy to install.
Just check Amazon, they have a bunch.

What do you recommend to remineralize the water? I've been buying apec alkaline filters that I like, but I'm open to recommendations

How does AquaTru compare to this? The NSF certifications look different. The unit doesn't look as nice and it's slightly more expensive than this unit.

If the water from this device is filtered as much as most proper RO systems filter the water, then yes, you can absolutely use RO water in a humidifier. I just use tap, my humidifier has a paper filter though.

I would get an under sink unit myself though if I was going with an RO system, I rent, I would still rather install one under the sink.

If someone just wants to improve taste of drinking water, get a pitcher filter or something under sink like this:

Slickdeals' sales on XL sizes of disgusting scents of dish detergent has filled the space under my sink 😁
