I would go AM5 since it's a fresh build. If you have a AM4 board and some ram around, then grab this.
Its only good if you already have an AM4 motherboard from before. Otherwise its pretty meh due to its price premium and being a one trick pony (good at gaming, not anything else).

If youre building new you want LGA1700 or AM5. Theres a 12600k deal for $180 that is great for a budget-midrange build only a few percent slower in gaming but 20% faster in multithread. Also tons of combo deals at microcenter and newegg for LGA1700 and AM5 that will get you a motherboard+DDR5+CPU for a fair price.

Getting back into PC building and 5800X3D seems like one of the best CPUs out there. But for new builds is this still worth it? Or better to go to with newer AM5 platform?

I keep debating picking one of these up. I'm currently using a 3700x. I know this is faster for gaming but I just can't decide if it's enough to justify the upgrade cost.

Shoot, I'm running a 5600x and even dealing with this conundrum.

I definitely wouldn't if I was you but here's an interesting comparison.

Is the 5800X3D a good upgrade for me?

I have a R5 3600 + 2070 Super but do not want to upgrade GPU for at least 12-18 months until the 40xx come down more

I also plan on sticking with Am4 for at least 4 years I suppose, since most games I play are older and never competitive, I see no reason for Am5

100%ā€¦If you aren't upgrading to AM5 or skipping out like I'm till AM6. Then this chip is will last you through the generation and onto the next. It's that powerful in regards to purely gaming.

Source: I personally have this and have tested it in a variety of games along with a 4090.

If you bought just the chip and not the CPU/RAM/MB bundle for $330, the 5800X3D offers 4 more threads and slightly higher peak speeds. If you're using it solely for gaming, hard to say if it's anything you would notice, both chips are pretty close tho.

How much did you pay for the 5600x3d? Those are just defective 5800x3d with disabled cores. If the price is close to this deal, I'd return and get this

Isn't the 5600x3d retail at $230? I'd spend the extra $40-50 for the 5800x3d personally

Some may be but most likely not even defective just disabled.
