I don't have one but have been wanting to try out. This seems to be a newly released model (?) and doesn't have the Gelato or Smoothie Bowl buttons compared to the regular 7-in-1 model.

OP, the term is "per se".

You can keep the pints in the freezer as long as you want (though taste will deteriorate over the course of several months if you wait too long and have a frost free freezer).
That being said, yes, the mix has to be frozen all the way. However, we found that taking the jars out before making dinner and putting them in the fridge will bring them to the correct temperature to make something that rivals Italian Gelateria products.
We use lots of canned fruit (pear, mandarin oranges, peach, cherry, etc.) and add anything from milk to yogurt to half & half and heavy whipping cream depending who will eat the final product.
Our newest concoction is home-grown figs in a mix of milk and half & half. No sugar needed (or at least for us as we don't eat that much sugar).
Ninja claims that there is a need for cream cheese. Hogwash! We make the best gelato like product with juice and milk and a splash of H&H or cream).
If you have the pint too cold, you get a crumbly product. Sit it on the counter or in the fridge for a bit the next time and see how that changes the texture.
Our original 7-in-1 (16 oz) and DeLuxe (24 oz) Creamis run daily during the summer and near daily during the winter. But then, we're in the Deep South where things don't get too cold

if i already have a blender that makes thick smoothies, will this be a significant improvement for 'ice cream'?
