Nice knife. Make sure you're buying from Chicago Cutlery to get this $46.87 price - lowest price ever for this model, according to my tracking.

Are there different versions of this knife? The one that ships and is sold by Amazon is $10 cheaper. I paid $26 for that one the last time it hit the front page.

D2 is often preferred over AUS-8 steel since D2 is a tool steel, which means it's harder and holds an edge longer. D2 is quite corrosion resistant too, but not as "stainless" as a AUS-8 steel AFAIK.
Carbon fiber handle is cool, but a personal preference if you want to pay the premium for that feel/weight/look that a CF handle gives you.
The Rat II is one of the most ergonomically perfect knives I've ever used, and a fantastic inexpensive EDC knife. I'm not sure that the upgrade to D2 and the carbon fiber scales is enough to warrant a doubling of the price. At $25 the regular Rat II is fantastic, not sure I want to spend double that on it. If they made a version that was with an even better steel and had micarta scales I'd probably get it.

You wouldn't pay $47 for it because it is overrated. Rats are no longer $20 bargains.
RAT 1 and 2 frequently go on sale between $24-25. Fantastic knife for the $. They've just become less popular because of the introduction of newer budget steels and knife models. As a budget EDC, it's just about perfect, especially for someone who might be new to knives and doesn't want to spend too much.

I haven't seen them under $30 in some time, but I don't keep tabs on this knife. Like you said, there are much better options these days.
Overrated? For years, this was one of the top rated EDC knives on the market. Wouldn't pay $47 for one, but a solid EDC no less.
I paid $24 for both my Rat 1 and 2. D2 and CF just isn't enough of an upgrade for twice the price.
Agreed on this. Given the kind of knives the Rat 1 and 2 are, I'd much rather spend that money putting micarta scales on them for grippiness under all conditions.
CF is purdy though.

Yes. it's just the market. Rat 1 and 2 are still both fantastic knives though.

The only thing with CF scales on budget knives is a lot of times it's often cheap with some glossed finish over it, so usually the CF is something I would want to see up close before purchasing. Micarta is definitely a good option, as long as you like your handles to patina from the oils, and of course you get a nice grip with it, as you mentioned.
