i have this set. used three times and have 3 broken ones already. They can not tighten without breaking internals. had one that the seal popped off first use and fell apart.. Not like they used to be.
Honestly in 25 years of wrenching, I can't say I've ever rounded a nut with a 12 point wrench. I get the concept, but I have never personally seen it... I suspect it's more user error not properly seating the wrench on the fastener, which would be a problem for any tool.
Gearwrench can be in-store swaps as well, depending on the store and their inventory. But even if you don't have a local place to do it, you still don't have to mail it in. They have an online form [gearwrench.com] to fill out, snap a few pics, and receive a replacement in the mail a few days later.

I found this set on clearance at my local Lowe's for roughly $28 last week. It says it's $19.47 now. They're not ratcheting but they work well enough for myself

Trust me ratcheting ones are worth their weight in gold after spending years wrenching on cars with my dads non ratcheting ones I bought some ratcheting ones for my place. It was life changing I could get stuff done in half the time no more making tiny little movements in tight spots then repositioning the wrench

You risk it because most of the time it doesn't matter either way and a 12-point wrench or socket is easier and faster to position/reposition on the fastener. I think it was an AvE video where he showed that he could break the head off the bolt before it would strip out using 12-point.

Probably this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzY4zoe0UcA&t=0s
AvE tests against a new (large head) bolt with decent wrenchs. That test looks way different with older bolts that may be already rounded or rusted or crappier 12 points or even smaller bolts. All depends on what you are working on.

That's why I said "if you have a decent wrench and non-rounded fasteners". If your wrench doesn't fit well or your fastener is pre-rounded (i.e. rusted all to hell), then go with 6-point. Otherwise, it won't really matter except that the 12-point is more convenient and faster to use.

I have had good luck with these with no issues doing brakes and calipers that were stuck pretty good. Hit with a dead blow hammer and cheaters.

I've had zero luck attempting to do anything less than mail swaps with Lowes.
I have no clue what youre telling them at lowes, I always show them the fine print that clearly says hassle free, and ive probably done at least 5 or 6 socket, ratchet, hand tool exchanges without question ever.

I have used this set for roughly 6 years now, automotive work, no issues at all. I've used long breaker bars on them, smacked them with hammers and rubber mallets, they hold up. The ratcheting part on the smaller units is designed poorly and uses a c-clip that commonly breaks but I just go in and get the hassle free exchange. It's a solid kit for the price, I got mine for $50 at a christmas time promotion as well.

I swapped a 3 year old kobalt air hose after it got a bubble for a brand new one. Also swapped a 40v blower trimmer combo after the blower died, just had to call and get a reference # and go to the store. Maybe I just had good associates?

If these were that atrocious in general, they would not have 5 stars on lowes. Looks like some terrible luck on your end. Or Lowes faked. their reviews.

Death to 12 point and to all the rounded nuts they have born.
This. It's tough to find a good 6 point set cheap.

Hard to put this in words. Any experience in the distance between the clicks on gearwrench? For example in a tight space do you have to swing the wrench 2mm or 10mm for the next click?

This or the Gearwrench set? Who has the easier warranty process?

https://www.homedepot.com/p/GEARW.../302569303 [homedepot.com]

edit: Leaning toward Gearwrench, the complaints seem to be mostly about missing sizes, Kobalts seem to have plastic internals that break.
Gearwrench all day. Better quality when it comes to ratcheting tools.

Nice deal. I needed to replace most of my wrenches since most of them have gone missing over time.

So for the hassle free exchange do I just take the broken wrench into Lowes? They don't have the individual wrenches to give me so I'm not clear what to expect. When I asked once they told me to call the phone number, which went nowhere. I'm all for insisting they honor the warranty.
