and it's better to use 18ga for shoe/qr. 16ga falls into a weird space that doesn't have much use imo.

That's not true at all. 16ga 2 1/2" is perfectly fine for baseboard. I have put entire walls (one piece) of wainscoting using 16ga nails. For shoe moulding or caps, 18ga is enough.
