My problem is rocks, rocks and more rocks.
I think rear tines are better for rocks. The weight of the machine is more on the tires and when it bucks it's more controllable.

I maybe predigested, my grandpa's front tine was a workout. The rear tine I used the last two years wasn't much a chore at all.

I have a Troy-Bilt Horse that I use to do the main tilling for our garden. My wife wants something she can use between the rows for weeding. I see a couple tines can be removed so that it's only a 16" path. That would be perfect, but I'm not sure my wife would be able to control it. Eh, nevermind, I didn't scroll down FP and didn't realize they had a rear tine (Legend Force) for the same price. I ordered the rear tine even though it's 20" wide. Wider path than we would like, but it should be easier for her to handle than the "Horse" or a front tine. $179 w/military discount is impossible to ignore.

The issue even with the tines from these rear tine tillers is they are spaced so there will be untilled soil left between them and thus you need to till a second time. One trick that works most of the time is to do the second pass in a perpendicular direction to the first. It still leaves small patches of untilled soil but that can be addressed as needed later with a hand tool.

I usually do two long vertical passes and finish by going one pass horizontally and it has worked well over the years.

I honestly don't 100% know the usages of a tiller.

I have a pretty jacked up lawn full of crabgrass and other shit that I basically got a scorch earth and start over. We aren't really talking about a huge size of land but potentially up to like a thousand square feet or more.

What this thing be completely overkill or at this price would there be enough stuff for me to use this on in the future to make it worth buying now?

IMO, I would go with this one: https://slickdeals.net/f/16811783-20-legend-force-4-cycle-212-cc-gas-gear-drive-tiller-199-free-shipping?page=1#commentsHeader

I almost bought this Champion 2 months ago and ended up getting one like the link above with the real tires. I'm afraid the dinky tires on this one would be a big detriment.
What about now that this one is 149.99? Worth the savings to get front version or is rear still the way to go?

Even so, a rear tine tiller would be preferable. Also keep in mind that ratings for the Champion one are highly misleading, as they include a lot of ratings for a rear tine tiller as well.
