Fishing is expensive too. I suppose we should stop fishing and only buy our fish from grocery stores?
What's crazy is walking into a room of aerogarden enthusiasts and telling them all they are dumb and wasting their money.

Good thing you have the internet to protect you from a real life altercation.
yeah, just a few days to collect details, then fuel and time to do pick-ups, a few hours to figure out how to build something that works the same way, few days for reading about hydroponic basics. So you end up with 300$+ crappy-looking piece (if you actually count everything, not just 2-3 random parts) instead of 250$ for a great-looking device with a warranty delivered to your door. So yeah, that works, if you are super-into diy and have a bunch of free time and all the required tools and (what's even more important) a place to build this thing.

If you're real cheapskate you can do something similar way cheaper. Plastic tub with lid + Holesaw + netcups +$10 pumps + $6 tubing and airstone + coco coir n perlite + timer. Decent LED grow lights are very cheap on the second hand market, too.

Won't look as nice, but still.
What makes you think cheapskates hang out around here ?? :-)

you could try some determinant varieties if you decide to kill off your indeterminant monster. that's probably what the 4/12 suggestion is based on.

i let an indeterminant cherry variety go for over a year just to see what would happen, but it got boring and not worth the hassle of constantly fighting and cleaning up after the vines.
I'm using the stock ones that came with the tomatoes and peppers grow kit. I'm at 250 days on the red and 180 for the golden. Picked easily 300+ tomatoes. The red cherry produces much better then the golden. In a few weeks the actual outdoor garden will start producing and I'll kill these off, reset everything, and do lettuce and herbs for a few months then after Christmas back to tomatoes.

i tried and gave up on this. everything i grew had very little flavor. nothing and i mean nothing beats growing food outside, in a raised bed with a good compost and mulch.
I have tended a couple 4x8 beds in my yard for years. No rocks, gets only peat moss and a couple bags of organic raised bed soil every year, and it gets sun from 10am until 7pm every day. Produces the best tasting vegetables I've ever had. With that said I do have the AeroGarden (see above) because where I live you can only garden 3 - 4 months a year. Plus it grows herbs and lettuce as good if not better then outside with no worry of bugs. But I 100% agree with you, the tomatoes are fine and save me from buying at the grocery store but nothing beats a garden grown tomato.

$250 to grow $8 worth of tomatoes. Unbelievable. Lol 😂

We've reached peak craziness.
You don't understand. These "tomatoes" cost $16 per gram..... $250 to grow $500 of "tomatoes".... Repeat

If you're handy and know what you're doing, sure. But some people just want the veggies. You can also brew coffee in a French press after grinding your own beans, but some people just want to stick in a kcup and get a cup of coffee in 30 seconds.

Ill chip one in as well, i have an aerogarden and gave it away. The amount of time i had to spend watering and adding plant food was enormous, and i think the electricity it cost actually ended up being way more expensive. i tried some cherry tomatoes and basil, cherry tomatoes yielded almost nothing, basil was weirdly way too hard, the one i get from whole foods in a plastic planter and water for 3 months is 1000x better (and $6 and i can sit it next to my sink and almost waters itself)

Its great if you cook a ton with fresh herbs thaaats about it.
The farm 12 costs $3 in electricity per month. You are definitely not paying more in electricity to grow stuff.

Weed is legal now in my state. Anyone know if this would work for home growing? I've never had a plant in my life.

i got an aphid infestation last year that i just couldn't get rid. ended up just euthanizing everything but chives which they either didn't like or just don't have the right structure for them to get their suckers into.
I did consider trying to find some ladybugs to release into the apartment, but couldn't find any outside.
I've had severe aphid infestations serially and haven't restarted since taking everything apart, soaking in vinegar, and sending everything that could through the dishwasher. I'm partially convinced that they are coming through the miracle grow solution as I don't have them on any other plants in my house

Lowest this unit has been was $220 shipped via Aerogarden's monster farm sale, so this is indeed a good deal.

It's more than just paying $$ for tomatoes. It's a gratifying hobby that you just so happen can eat Smilie For indeterminate, I highly suggest only one pod used in the 12 (think heirlooms like Black Krim or sprawling cherry tomatoes) and for determinate you can get away with 3 and have great results. Tomatoes are thirsty and nutrient hogs, so the fewer in the unit the better.

For those worried about taste being minimal, good genetics, proper nutrition (I use General Hydroponics Flora 3 part), and especially Calmag+ all will ensure delicious yields.

Re: the devil's lettuce - yep, this unit works great for it and a nice guide website was already provided above. Just be sure to go with an autoflower seed as they are easier to manage and tend to stay within the max height of the LED panel.

Enjoy!

do you gets bugs? if so, how do you deal with them?
Hi, I have bugs but have not had any bugs on my plants yet that I can tell. I use a Katchy Duo 2n1 insect trap. It has a UV light on top that attracts the bugs and the fan sucks them in and they stick to a glue board and you toss them in the trash. My setup is a 4th bathroom we didn't use that I converted to a grow room so that also isolates them from bugs. I really like the Insect trap, it works great. Hope this helps.

I grow a single tomato per 12 spots. They grow massive, I have a Farm24 Plus with a single red and single golden cherry tomato and it takes up the entire thing, grow lights are at the highest setting and I had to buy a second set of trellis to try to keep it contained. There is no way 4 plants will fit unless you are constantly trimming them back.
I see. I have moved 3 of the 4 of my tomato plants to outdoor. I will see how it look in the end. They're 40 days or so, so they're still small.

What makes for a decent LED grow light?
Spectrum: A good LED grow light should provide a balanced and appropriate spectrum for all stages of plant growth.

Energy efficiency: LED grow lights should be energy-efficient compared to traditional lighting systems like High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lights. Energy efficiency not only saves on electricity costs but also reduces heat output, which can be critical for indoor growing environments.

Coverage area: The size of the area that the LED grow light can effectively cover with the appropriate intensity of light is an important consideration. Choose a light that matches the size of your grow space, ensuring that all plants receive adequate light.

Heat management: Good LED grow lights have effective heat sinks and cooling systems to dissipate excess heat. Overheating can damage the LEDs and reduce their lifespan, so proper heat management is crucial for long-lasting performance.

Durability and lifespan: LED grow lights generally have a longer lifespan compared to traditional lights, but the quality of components and build still matters to ensure durability and reliability.

Did you find that somewhere or just know all this info? Thanks either way. I stumbled across the Barinna T5 that seem to be popular and aren't too badly priced on Amazon, thinking of going with that
