Put the tester in regular outlets wired downstream from a GFCI outlet. Press the test button on the tester to see if these outlets will trip the upstream GFCI outlet in case of a ground fault. The test button on the upstream GFCI outlet can only test whether that specific outlet will trip after a ground fault.
