Fares are around 1.5 to 2.0x what they were last week for the segment we booked for late august. Maybe there are deals out there, but for our trip it looks more like a shell game. Might be entertaining to see if fares reduce again on Aug 4th.

How so? I suspect you can use the promo code on a flight, and then add the companion. I don't see how they would preclude it. You can use CP on any flight you take, including points flights.

The T&C only uses the word 'companion' once and that's just to say companion flights don't count as a qualifying flight to receive the coupon.

This is a solid deal.

So buy a flight to travel during a slow travel period so that you can get 1/2 off a base fares during another slow travel period…not too enticing.
