I just ordered one, the reviews won me over. I've never soldered before and I've always wanted to, so why not give this a shot.

Seems like a really good deal for someone wanting to try out soldering. For someone planning on doing more regular hobby soldering, you might end up wanting to upgrade down the road for reliability, portability, temp consistency, etc.
If you fall into the latter category it might be worth considering investing $25-30 more and getting Pinecil or TS101 with a solid power supply and upgraded firmware.

For hobby soldering purposes you'll be better off buying a T12 or similar soldering kit/station. There are a lot of Chinese knock offs for the price of this kit.

Usually, Google gives good results...

Here is one example:

Can you explain your comment a bit more for those of us who have no experience soldering? You're saying that a T12 is higher quality product and that there are inexpensive Chinese versions of a T12 that are worth getting even though they are Chinese knock offs?

I ask as someone who has never actually used a soldering iron before. My dad had gotten me free soldering irons from Harbor Freight promotions, but none ever worked right. Some didn't heat up enough to melt the solder; some didn't heat up at all; one of them caught on fire then completely melted. I figure that I should get something better than those even though my needs are extremely modest.

I know nothing about soldering but bought this a while ago for 3D printed inserts :

Is this good ? Should I replace it with T12 like you mentioned ? Its still returnable.

The T12 and other similar iron tips are an evolution (or revolution) over the regular irons with ceramic heaters in the handle. T12 incorporates the heater in the tip, close to soldering zone, which drastically improves the heat transmission and permits to stabilize pretty well the temperature for pretty big copper polygons. From my experience, it is the same feeling as when you move from riding a 40 year old car into a new, sporty one.

What do you think about a Pinecil (Pinecil-BB2)?

I own one of these. It's perfect if you have to solder something once in a while. You'll need a PD charger or power bank capable of delivering 60-100w in order to have it effectively perform. Also not all types of tips are available for it. The handle is not very comfortable for me so for my day-2-day hobbist activity I use a STM32 T12 soldering station (you can find it in the around of $50-$60 range).

I got the Feita 950D. I like the 950D, heats up quickly and solders well with lead free solder. Don't get the old style soldering stations like in this "deal".

I have had this exact item, bought about 4 years ago, think for. 45 dollars.

It works extremely well. I have 50 years plus engineering experience in electronics assembly.

Learning how to and how soldering works is a enriching educational experience.
