The PENN Battle II offers attractive cosmetics, durable design, and silky smooth HT-100 drag as just a few of the many reasons why so many anglers fish this reel. The Full Metal Body construction allows it to maintain precision gear alignment under severe punishment. With the Superline Spool, no backing is needed because of the rubber gasket that keeps superlines from slipping. A great value for the price point. Saltwater breeds a different kind of angler. It toughens you. It cures you like bacon. It leaves you thirsty for the next fight. Hard core saltwater anglers need equipment that is as tough as they are, and as reliable as the rising tide. At PENN, we've been testing the limits of saltwater fishing since 1932, which is why our reputation for durability runs so deep. PENN. LET THE BATTLE BEGIN.

We need more fishing deals! This reel is a beast. It works great for surf fishing. Make sure you rinse it after every use. It will last for years. Nice find OP.
This is only hot because fishing reels seldom go on sale anymore and prices spiked due to inflation... I would still spend the extra $20 on a daiwa BG instead.

Yes!!
I have a Penn Battle and a Daiwa BG- the Daiwa is so much smoother. The Battle is a good rugged feeling reel, but if you want smooth action the upgrade to Daiwa is worth it.
Can anyone explain what makes a reel better? I am pretty noob to reels specifically. I bought a pfluger president and i absolutely love it. I have heard/read that its a great bang for the buck.
I cant explain why, but its lighters and smoother feeling that some of my cheaper reels. Is there any other feedback i should be looking for in reels?

Ya Japanese designed reels are generally smoother and often times lighter, without compromising on strength or sturdiness.
Not saying Penn Battle series is bad. It is actually very good too.

higher end reels seals against corrosion in multiple areas. The president doesn't have any seals except maybe the top drag. They are also usually made of metal alloy construction for longer life and strength. The gearing is what makes the reel smooth and that is where daiwa and shimano excel. Penn still uses brass gears which take a while to break in. People who fish all the time want smooth reliable gearing because they reel millions of cranks a year. Penns are heavy duty reels that last forever but they are heavy and the gearing isn't very smooth to start with but they are easy to take apart and service. High end Daiwas aren't meant to be serviced at home.

I second that. Have both reels and love daiwa bg so much more. my experience with battle 3 is not so good though, had to send it for repair to manufacurer 2 times within 1 year...

Edit:
Looks like minor upgrades. Line capacity markers, slightly bigger line capacity, and max drag was increased from 30 to 40
