Saw this popped up in my Walmart alert. I was debating on this or the big joe I and decided to go with the big joe since it was on sale. figured I'd post this for anyone interested.

Is this a better buy compared to a weber mastertouch?

I fire up the Akorn more than this. The built is not as solid as in the other KJ models. I recommend the Classic over this one if you can swing the money.

There's a vast difference between this and the Kamado Joe ceramic grills. This is thin metal, not ceramic. Unless you just really want this look, you'd be better served by buying a used Weber Kettle grill off Facebook marketplace.

Think of it as a slightly better insulated mastertouch, with an attachment for smoking. I would not recommend one over the other. Just by the one you want. I own the kettle joe, and I expected it to be much closer to a kamado and its performance. I decided to buy a kamado and sell mine.

I own this, and do not recommend it for anything other than smoking. It uses a lot of coal because the coal is so far away from the meat, so it doesn't like to sear. Grilling it rarely produces crust. Considering Walmart has the Classic Joe 1 on sale, that's what you should be buying. If you missed out, just wait for the next sale, it's not a big deal they go on sale all the time. I guarantee you can get one cheap on black friday. The kettle Joe was nothing but a disappointment for me. Furthermore, this company is in a meltdown right now ever since getting bought out by private equity. Your warranty claims are going to take months. Do not recommend.

As a15 year veteran of the Weber kettle, I find this easily as good and better because of the ceramic inserts and the ability to be able to smoke differently than a Weber. I loved my Weber don't get me wrong but I get way more out of this than the Weber. Also you can literally put the grate 2 inches from the coals if you want that sear. The versatility of this is better at least for me.! (Totally subjective though I suppose)

You're speaking of using this with the slo-roller Insert. The insert is only to be used for slow and low… for grilling you take out the slo-roller insert and put the grates right next to the coals (the lid adjusts). You can even do two tier cooking with the slo-roller removed. You can do everything a Weber kettle can do and the slow and low with more smoke with the slow roller.
But I know it's not for everyone. I had to add lava lock so it didn't leak so much.

To be clear - without the insert my burgers were coming out with no crust. Like they were boiled or roasted. This thing is just SO deep. The coals are too far from the meat. You can solve that by filling it up higher but now you're using way too much charcoal to be practical. Personally, I like to light ½ a chimney to 1 full chimney for burgers and dogs. Not 1 ½ chimneys or even 2 for a good steak. The one thing that made the grill better was a Slow n' Sear pro - but if that's how you want to cook, just buy a Weber or SnS grill. You don't need the complication of the Kettle Joe.

-My $0.02. it's not a bad grill, but I think most people would be happier with a Weber or SnS.

Oh I get where you're coming from. If not using a full chimney I could see how it is a bit distant from the coals. In that case I'll back the coals to one side, but even still a kettle and a slow n sear will net the same results.
