While these are reliable, dual hose units - the newer Midea Inverter based units are more efficient, quieter and move a whole lot more air.
Own both the Whynter ARC-14s in storage now as backups, as well as the 14k BTU Midea units, which have replaced the Whynters at our house.

It's hard to describe how much better the Midea units are - soft ramp up for the compressor, and running at fractional compressor capabilities to maintain room temperature - the inverter compressor control is fantastic. Additionally, the Mideas are wireless enabled - you can set schedules with the app, and control them remotely. The Wynters are just hard ON at 100% capacity or OFF - there is no middle ground with them, but they are fine units - just older, less efficient technology.
I have one of those refurbished Toshiba and haven't had a problem with the ac. The Toshiba is quieter than this one and cools down my living room pretty quickly. I don't think this is a inverter compare toToshiba which can save you money in the long run.
The Toshiba/rebranded Midea refurbished inverter one on woot that everyone is talking about is actually dual hose even though it looks like a single. It's a hose inside another much bigger hose so it's still two airstreams. So I'd believe it if the efficiency is just as good or better than this Whynter. That and the heating and wifi integration on the Toshiba work pretty nicely.

I got one of these for $520 4 months ago for my FL garage hydroponic garden. Absolutely love it. in a hot FL summer day in uninsulated garage when temps peak at 94f at 5pm the grow will climb to 86f with all the lights, pumps and chillers running. -2 degrees if lights are off. If outside temps are under 86 it can easily hold it at 78f. When super hot like right now it runs constant from 11am - around 11pm. Then cuts on and off as needed. Its for plants so I have it set at 84, which turns on at 85f, turns off at 80f. While not as good as the new split units for a truely portable unit this thing is great. I'm almost tempted to grab another as backup. Unbelievable deal.

it became much much less effective second summer, it ices up more often as well which is an indicator.
Did you slip the filter out of the back and vacuum it clean a couple times per summer?
Icing-up can also indicate a lack of air flow over the icy coils.
For the record, I'm just speaking "generally". Mine's never iced up. Just suggesting that a significantly dirty filter would steer it that direction.

I have both of them. Both of them although being dual hose create negative pressure in the room. You can feel the draft of air coming in from door 0.5 inch open.
Disappointed in both of them. In order to notice this effect, you will need to seal the window properly.
I can't understand why the condenser fan section can't be sealed properly so that there is no negative pressure.
Standalone units alway create negative pressure… with the dual hose you just get to choose to have the negative pressure come from through the second hose

I just upgraded to this from a Haier single hose unit and the difference is so noticable. Don't get me wrong, the Haier was fine for what it is but this your cools so much better. Tried the Midea from Costco, but on top of being DOA, the big hose within a hose does not stretch out as far as this one with dual hose so it didn't reach our window and was useless. That's another thing to keep in mind.

I have the Toshiba heat-pump 14kbtu and this. This cools way better - not even close.
The heat on the Toshiba is nice but you can get a much more effective space heater/

Your response doesn't make sense. Read what I wrote, comprehend and then reply/ post. I said that after the installation, the room experiences negative pressure so that there is an inward draft of air. Which means, just like a single hose unit, it is expelling the cold room air out and thereby sucking in the air from the outside. Not as bad as a single hose unit but it is replacing the air.
This implies that the air circulation around the condenser section is not sealed properly from the evaporator section.

I bought this unit when it was $500 a few weeks ago as a backup in case my central unit went out. From what I recall reading, I believe the behavior your are experiencing is by design, oddly. Somewhere in the manual, it states the intake hose is optional if you're running the AC, which made me scratch my head. If it's a dual hose, why would the intake be optional; does that mean it's not much different than a single-house unit that just sucks in the air from around the unit--ie, it's no better than a single hose unit?

I guess you've confirmed this dual hose unit doesn't work how one would normally expect it to work.

He/she probably refering to the midea u shaped window ac. It's not portable ac like this one. People who get portable ac often times couldn't install a window ac. But if you can, get any window ac, it is miles more efficient than any portable ac.

No, I'm referring to the portable one. The Midea 14K BTU inverter unit.

Toshiba sells a rebranded one that's quite popular on here - the only difference is is says 'Toshiba' vs. 'Midea' - identical in every other way that I can see. Other vendors do the exact same thing with his unit - it's that good. It comes in black or white - and heat pump model, or not - that's it as far as i can tell. I have the heat-pumps, so they can push out some efficient heat when needed.
