Guys (and gals), any AC smart deal listing should include EER!!!!
Decent efficiency. These mechanical units should be more reliable. Dual split system may reduce power consumption by 35-45 percent, but you'll need to run the AC 365/year to achieve a reasonable pay back period.

I use my 8000 BTU LG for ten hours per day, 25 days per year. It would take more than 6.5 years to break even with the initial cost of a dual-split assuming you do the installation.

Just prove it for everyone to see, and that will solve everything.
I bought this exact unit a few weeks ago and it includes a set of mounting brackets and side panels.

Window shakers are so inexpensive now. Back in the 70s a unit like this ran $250+. I had one, and sold it in the 90s for over $100

Well that does it then, that's enough proof for me to buy one! LMAO

I've had this AC for a few years. I have a real love/hate thing with it.

It has been very reliable and gets super cold. Even on the low setting it cools 4 rooms and my bedroom gets freezing cold at night. I'm very hot natured so it's not easy for me to stay cool.

But I wish I had never purchased it. It doesn't drain well. I hear water trickling inside it all the time. Black mold build up on the styrofoam inside and it's impossible to clean.

You will need to drill holes in it to help the water drain better. But it still may grow mold. There's just something weird about the way it's made. It's not designed properly.

It is supposed to bubble like that and it is working as intended. It should always have a bit of water in the pan. The small level of water cools the condenser and when it gets too high it drips out. Drilling holes will shorten the life of the unit.

Also you should be pulling it out and cleaning it at least once a year to prevent that mold issue.

Guys. Not looking to highjack the thread here. I have a central AC unit. Works great. No real complaints. But it's just me alone in a 1k sqft 2 bed 2 bath house. My gut tells me that it HAS to be wasteful to turn on the central air for the entire house when all I really need is for the bedroom to be cold for the 7 or so hours that I'm sleeping.
Should I get this/or some other window unit to save on energy?
Note: I have literally no handyman skills. Had a ductless that worked great but leaked HORRIBLY. It was like a leaking faucet at the vent where the cold air came out. Never figured out how to fix it. Hoping the window unit will have less headache, and less mechanical knowhow to install. Any and all info would be appreciated!

Yes, you'll save a lot of money doing that in the summer. In the winter, using an electric heater (250 to 800 watts depending on need) for the room one sleeps in will also save most people a lot of money. The rest of the house doesn't need to be anywhere near as warm.

Also, anyone can install a window AC unit. I just use a bunch of duct tape for my old window and it works fine. This also helps "lock" the window so it won't open from the outside, just in case.

If you're used to central air I'd get a U shaped window unit.

These window units will be like living next to a train in comparison to the current central unit unless the compressor is outside your window.

Make sure your windows will work with a window unit AC. Many houses with central air have fancy windows that are not compatible.

If you have the choice and the budget, look into the Midea U shaped units. They literally changed my entire outlook on window AC units. The instructions are clear and there are plenty of videos from Midea online on how to install and care for them. Anyone can install one with a drill, 1/8" drill bit, a small level and a Phillips screwdriver. Check that the unit will work with your window type and frame dimensions.

Agreed. I have a split level house (garage below bedrooms) and I put a Midea U-Shaped 8000 BTU in two of the three bedrooms and they changed the rooms entirely, it's so nice. The 8k versions use something like 100w on the lower settings and peak at 350-400w or so at startup and when running on high.

I would probably avoid refurbished ones unless it's a good-good deal. I bought one new on and one refurbished, and I spent about a third of the savings between the two on foam/tape that the refurbished one didn't include.

I couldn't care less what those reviews say. Read the description, it's very clear that the brackets and side screens are optional.
I own 2 of these units and it does come with side panels.

Now the weight of this unit is around 35 pounds, I placed it in my bedroom, and I live in Central florida, and the temp gets over 100 degrees in summer.

If you look at the pictures of the unit, on Amazon page you can see the side screens in the photos, that is exactly how mine looks.

I like this device! So works for me.
