Because that is not a comparable product - The Amazon Basics ones are legitimate sponge-type material, the type generally found in a sponge from you local grocery store. Your above linked product, as with all of the super-el-cheapo sponges on Amazon, are a couch-cushion-foam-like material (sorry I have no idea what the correct name is for the materials) which is not nearly as absorbent and does not clean nearly as well as the normal sponge-like material.

Actually the "cheap" foam is much better at not turning smelly

That is an interesting point! I'll try them.
I think the problem folks have with this type is when they need to sponge up a liquid spill...it's like herding cats...the liquid just gets pushed around and nothing is absorbed...which may be why they don't smell :-)
[I'm assuming these the ones that feel like urethane foam (similar to what is often used inside pillows and cushions...but a lower density.]

No you didn't. They only sell 5 (heavy duty) and 10 (light duty) packs. No reason to make things up. Both packs sell for $1.25.

I've never really had that problem with the regular sponges - you just have to rinse them well after sopping up anything organic, and always squeeze as dry as possible and don't let them sit wet - yeah, it's a bit of a hassle, admittedly, but probably why I had not noticed a difference with the foam ones. Unfortunately, even if the foam ones are better at not getting smelly, they seem to be worse at everything else, I guess it's a trade-off.
