Yes, it has a 20-lb drag. I have the kvd and the Tournament mp and pull stripers out of Lake Mead and Lake Mohave with braided line. This reel has the same specs. I can't comment on the rod, but the reel is at least $149 worth. I usually hate combos as I hate most Rods that come with, but this is definitely a great value, and i just purchased it as a cheap lews rod is over $40. I've never fished for salmon, so I have no idea about the requirements. my only want is I wish there were more gear ratio options.

In for one, thanks OP.

Have 4 spinning setups, got into fishing this spring and wanted to get a baitcaster. Was looking at curado and the tatula, but at this price it's hard to even consider any other options.

Lews is known for great CS also, which helps that decision further.

How would you say this reel compares to a similar prices shimano or tatula? I'm trying to talk myself into buying this but at the same time an slx is around $100 and I currently use a Curado and I love it. Granted that reel is a little pricier but I've seen them on sale for around $140 recently since new models are coming out.

I love the SLX, but I like the Lew's better than the base slx. I like DC shimanos more, but it's over the price I'm willing to pay for a reel. I haven't fished with the Tatula, so I can't really comment on it. The dual braking can take getting used to, but I don't fiddle with it much as leaving 2 centrifugal brakes on and 2 off covers most baits, and I just adjust magnetics. (it's really because I'm clumsy and will drop the plate in the lake)

That's good to know. Would you put this reel up there with the Curado? Is it close? I really don't need another rod and like you I usually hate rods that come in combos anyway so I'm looking at this as buying a reel and getting an extra rod for free that may or may not fill a need. At worst it's an extra rod to have in case one breaks. I don't have a lot of experience with Lews rods past the smash and American hero and I guess those were ok. A little heavy but they did perform.

It's a good quality reel, but if your just looking for a reel as an extra you can find the KVD and the Tournament MP for under $110 this is also a 4 year old design even though all the specs are the same. The Curado K is better but not 100 dollars better, but if you find one for around 150, grab it

Good to know. I'm reading that this rod might be a relabeled lews tp1 black casting rod. They go for around $140. This just looks like too good of a deal to pass up. Thanks for the input.

$99 this would be a cop but at $130 I feel like the diminishing returns dropped off $30 where if you spent more, you would be in the high end reel category with better options.

Lew's combos should stick to sales of $99 for their "high end" stuff.

That's kind of where my thoughts are. This is a combo and you're basically getting a free rod. It's an HM50 blank. I guess it would depend on how good this rod is quality and sensitivity wise. If it's just an ok rod I feel like $130 or a little more would get you a way better rod or reel.

It's basically a tournament mp it's a great reel and normally $150, so it's a good price, not great at $129, and the lowest I've seen is $107 reel only. Now throw in the rod. Lew's cheapest rod is $40 this isn't their cheapest it was once one of their most expensive combos, so it's probably a $75 to $100 rod. But rods are better bought for a type of fishing you want yo do
