The Last Samurai is legit. Probably Cruise's best film.

It's based on the career of Capt Jules Brunet going to advise the Imperial army but then joining the Shogun rebels. I don't know how native he went but the rough outline of the story really went down that way.

You make a number of good points but despite the criticisms the movie is done so well I don't see it as "cringe" at all. I thought it was and still is absolutely fantastic.

I'm white and most of the movies I watch are Korean, Japanese or Hong Kong. Sadly Hollywood is garbage. I got in a Samurai vortex last year and watched 20 or so and Seven Samurai is STILL the blueprint! Gonna have to rewatch this I guess, I remember being less than impressed but it's been awhile.

I'm Asian and I find many Hollywood movies are awesome. I almost never watch Korean, Japanese, and Hong Kong movies. laugh out loud
