Absolutely not garbage, this is an excellent computer at this price. Would serve the vast majority of people's use cases. Though personally if I was in the market I'd buy a used M1 Macbook Air for ~$500 on eBay
Another option for the newer M2 version can be had directly at the Apple Edu store for $499 + $100 Apple gift card if you're into the ecosystem and would use the gift card, makes the current Gen model the same price:

This would be a perfect entry level Mac for an average user. I am a long time Mac kool-aid drinker lol, but even my mid-level computing tasks are adequately served with the base model 15" MacBook Air which has the exact same specs. Runs smoother than most PCs I've used that look better on paper. I also don't play games on my Mac lol.
Some people see 8GB and immediately crap on it... this tells me they've never actually put fingers on an M1 or M2-based Mac. Simple as that. It's not like Windows where 8GB isn't enough.

This is a good deal on a nice little small form factor Mac.

Yeah, because sooooo many people are just throwing out their old Macs instead of selling them for ~60-70% of what they paid for them 5 years ago.
If they have failed drives or memory, they can't be booted. They are unrepairable. I'm sorry if this is the first time you're hearing this and it's shocking that a company would do this. Indeed that is what Apple is doing.

And how long you used a windows computer with 8gb vs 16gb. Check benchmarks. Difference is similar at Mac and Windows. Although small enough for both cases.

Not quite... i've used Windows both personally and professionally for 20 years. M1-M3 macs are much better when it comes to memory management. 8GB goes much farther on an M1 mac than it does in Windows.

Question is not if M1 is good or PC is good in memory management. Question is how much difference 8g vs 16g ram makes for each (i.e. if Windows is bad in managing 8gb it would also be bad at managing 16gb and difference can still be small). This is not a matter of opinion. There is data and both for mac and pc in most applications difference is quite small. If you need to use primarily memory intensive applications for each you should pay for it. Otherwise not a big deal for any of them.

In terms of comparing mac vs PC, what I would look as a consumer is what I can buy for the same amount of money. I don't care what is under the hood, for my budget PC generally gives me much better performance especially if you follow the deals.
