Absolutely not garbage, this is an excellent computer at this price. Would serve the vast majority of people's use cases. Though personally if I was in the market I'd buy a used M1 Macbook Air for ~$500 on eBay
Another option for the newer M2 version can be had directly at the Apple Edu store for $499 + $100 Apple gift card if you're into the ecosystem and would use the gift card, makes the current Gen model the same price:

https://www.apple.com/us-edu/shop...c/mac-mini

This would be a perfect entry level Mac for an average user. I am a long time Mac kool-aid drinker lol, but even my mid-level computing tasks are adequately served with the base model 15" MacBook Air which has the exact same specs. Runs smoother than most PCs I've used that look better on paper. I also don't play games on my Mac lol.
Some people see 8GB and immediately crap on it... this tells me they've never actually put fingers on an M1 or M2-based Mac. Simple as that. It's not like Windows where 8GB isn't enough.

This is a good deal on a nice little small form factor Mac.

I have m1 MacBook Pro from 2020 16gb/ 512 config. My mac keep throwing me message of low application memory with Chrome having 20-40 tabs and other apps like slack and zoom active. I regret upgrading. I haven't still return my old one yet. Waiting for the resolution from support team.
Note: I have used migration assistant app to copy over my data from my old MacBook Pro which has intel chip.

They also have the early 2023 version for $499. Is it worth the extra $100 for the m2 chip? Looking for a low power usage desktop just for browsing and such and leaving my gaming machine off.

Yeah I guess we disagree, there. Also "vast majority of use cases" is a bit of a sweeping generalization. I'm a "power user", but I wouldn't even buy this for my mother or father who are decidedly not. 256GB is just too sh*tty. With a 256GB drive she could barely sync iCloud photos and videos locally and have room left over . And 8GB RAM?? OK so 1 maybe 2 applications open at the same time?? Even my M1 Mini test machine has at least has 16GB RAM (and 1TB storage). This may suit the needs of some in the short term, but the CPU will far outlast the storage. In other words, the M1 is fantastic and will remain relevant for years. But 8GB RAM + 256GB are really not "future proofed". It's why I went for 1TB in my 14" MBP and 1TB in my 12.9" M1 iPad Pro. My first iPad Pro 12.9" lasted 6.5 years (bought on launch day). I learned the hard way, having bought the base model with 32GB of storage. It was fine for 2-3 years, but with applications and content I could barely update iOS any more without clearing out storage.
You know what they say about people who label themselves a "power user." Smilie

I honestly use my computer to watch sports and printing. I save nothing on it. 8gb of ram works fine. I use my phone for everything else.
I don't think RAM does what you think it does

I routinely keep 200-300 tabs open (I have 280 right now) in Chrome. Insane to most people, but it's how I work best. But I also have a 32GB Macbook Pro and use a tab memory manager (it unloads unused tabs). 16GB was mostly fine, but I would run into performance issues if I didn't restart every few days. People running into memory issues with 20-40 tabs and 16GB of RAM should look at their Activity Monitor to see where they memory is going because that's a bit crazy.

I have this exact computer bought in 2020. As an everyday user who just uses the browser and the occasional Pages or Numbers file, I find this computer plenty fast. Many people writing about how bad it is don't realize that many computer users don't play video games on their computers or do any video editing. I still use my 2009 iMac and a 2013 iMac daily and they still chug along, although slower if I have multiple browsers open. I'm writing this post on my 2009 iMac and use it for browsing and checking emails every day. This is closer to what the average person uses computers for. Most computer users don't have any clue what terms like SSD or RAM even mean, and barely can edit a photo for instagram; all of you more tech-savvy millennials often forget that. I expect that my M1 Mac Mini will still be used until at least 2030 or 2035 before I give up on it.

I'm confident in how I use a computer after reading this. I can only imagine what you might need more than 10 tabs constantly open for or why you wouldn't shut down and restart every day. Anyone that needs to know how to use a computer, please message me.

Not sure if you're joking or not, but I have run and currently run very large projects and entire organizations this way. I was a software engineer for 15 years. I have lived and breathed computers since I was 7 (and I'm kinda old). If you can't even comprehend how anyone would ever need more than 10 tabs, no offense but your computer needs and life are probably quite simple.

Best price available to determine if you can live among the banal Eloi or were born with infinite potential like a useful Morlock.

The cheapest way to find out if you prefer to spend the rest of your life in a dystopian shopping mall or just love computers and freedom of choice.

Are you okay with doing work to accomplish what you want or is the world gonna just make you a winner?

Runs completely silent and faster than my gaming PC for normal non gaming tasks.

Can still game a little as well. Never even used a PC with more than 8 gb ram
