Sorry you had to deal with that. Unfortunately, spares are becoming less common in ICE cars as well, so this situation can be hard to avoid.

One tip - if you call the number on the back of any Visa credit card you have, they have pre-negotiated a flat rate of $80 for a tow up to 5 miles: https://usa.visa.com/content/dam/...enefit.pdf

I used them for the first time this summer. We had a tire completely blow out in the first ten miles. Luckily it was just my wife, two kids, and two dogs in a fully packed van. We called and they apologized profusely. They put us in touch with their roadside assistance who said it would be 3.5 hours for a tow. No spare. Thankfully a state trooper pulled over and got us quicker assistance. We got towed back to the airport we rented from, only to find out that they closed and went home with us stranded a few miles away. No new rental available.

The icing on the cake is how they still charged us for the entire rental period and they charged us for roadside assistance. Over $1,000 for 10 miles of driving. Plus the tow truck that ended up costing $200 out of pocket (which was a bargain)

All they offered us was a coupon for a free day on our next rental. Nothing else. Plus it was almost impossible to find an agent who would respond by voice.

* Your best bet is to blast them in tweets and they will finally get back to you and offer you, while nothing worth while unless you rent often.

Actually the opposite. I think they make a lot of sense if you park in your garage at home with a charger. With my electric rates at home, charging an F-150 lightning would be half the price of fueling my current 2.7L gas F-150. You still have to justify the initial purchase price, but if you drive enough going electric can absolutely make financial sense and you're saving time charging at home vs wasting time at the gas station.

However, charging at public chargers is about the same price as gas when you compare equivalent vehicles, i.e. F-150 Lightning to F-150 ecoboost. You're paying just as much and getting less convenience, and that's not an SD.

I get it, Hertz is an electric term. We're meant to make that association.

Rented a model Y in France, besides being too big, it wasn't a problem.

I own a couple non-Teslas. I love them, but without certain overnight charging them, they are a bit of a hassle.

Why does this bit of truth have so many downvotes?

Aren't most people pretty busy when they're traveling? So you either have to take time out of your trip to wait for it to charge or rely on the hotel you're staying at having a working and available charger and go straight from the hotel to return the rental. Electric cars as rentals just make no sense to me.
Yes, it was definitely an inconvenience with the base model 3. The thing has terrible range, so I had to find a charger near the airport, which was super busy because Hertz uses it to charge their electric cars. I am going to stick to gas rental cars with Hertz in the future unless the electric vehicle is the cheapest option.

Enterprise was a much more pleasant experience, they allowed you to return it without a charge if it was above 20%. I would rent an electric vehicle from them again.

Lastly, Teslas Supercharger network has become busier and busier, and the 250 KWH chargers almost always have a line, and the 72 KWH (and 150 KWH chargers if busy) take forever.

I put electric cars on ICE because of limited range, limited charging, limited technology and antique use of electricity.

Polestar is the way to go! I'd never rent a Tesla though. Waste of $ for such low quality vehicle.

How about anyone who thinks an EV is a bad rental actually rent one and find out? I rented a Model 3 from Hertz and it was great.

It won't fit all use cases but for 90% of rentals it's probably just fine. And the bonus is that if you charge at the hotel or AirBnB then you don't have to stop at a gas station to fill up before returning the car.
Did the airbnb agreed to allow charging ? That could incur costs they were not expecting. Charging is not free for home owners. If i had an airbnb i would not allow it. You can literally spent about $20 a day of electricity charging a Tesla or similar battery size.

many electric companies offer rebates for at-home charger installation. also, chevy will install it for free with the purchase of a bolt. even out of pocket, it's not super expensive,
It depends, my friends are being quoted $1500+ to set up their chargers at home. I installed mine free. Only paid for the parts, $400 the charger itself and $90 in wires and other parts. I'm not an electrician, and had a friend to help.

No at all, go reserve a test drive with them for free (limited time but you can manage to spend an hour or two with the car. They won't pressure you to buy, their store's associates aren't really car salespeople. But id also consider other electric options before you buy one.

When you rent a Tesla and use a supercharger is Hertz charging your credit card for the actual cost or is there an additional fee?
