Can't speak for them but there's a couple reasons people tend not to like them. The main reasons being they're small and they're not super powerful. Small limiting you on what size material you can feed through it, lack of power meaning you're going to be taking off less material and making more passes with it and it may struggle if you threw a really hard wood at it. For me at $150 vs $2000+ those are reasonable compromises - I'm not doing work for anyone but myself, working in affordable materials that aren't going to be especially hard, and want it so I can take those cheap and smaller pieces of material and make glue ups into slabs or wider material much easier. Of course if you compare it to a professional grade version it's going to disappoint, but I don't think most people looking to buy this are doing it if they had the money or square footage for a production quality machine. Just my two cents on that.

I bought this in mid-2020 for $360 and sold it last year for $250, so this is a steal. As far as jointers go it's not fantastic but it does a nice job at jointing smaller boards (I'd say less than 3 feet). If you're making small stuff like cutting boards, boxes, picture frames, etc. then this will be a great little addition to the shop.

Lol the next step up from this is like 5-20x the cost. Even your beloved ridgid is 8x the price of this thing.

I think all the jointers this size (WEN, Grizzly, ShopFox, Jet) are made in the same factory and just rebranded. Some of those rebrands they swap the cutter to a spiral but it's the same thing.

this is probably the lowest price you'll ever find on this joiner. it's $429.99 on Amazon and $371.96 at Home Depot.
I live in Texas, and there's no Menards anywhere near me. However, they do ship it to your home. my full order came out to $144.50 after tax $18.36 shipping fee via UPS ground and a $2.80 processing fee. Then of course I'll get the $12.36 rebate back.

Don't really need it but couldn't say no at that price. More flexible than using my router table.

Local store had some in stock! In for one. Reviews from Lowes.com look decent so this should meet my entry-level woodworking needs. I'm not sure what the typical price is but it's likely no less than $200.
