I recently bought this and its runs good.

Anyone else have issues running out of memory pretty quickly? Even with not that many Apps installed?

Well.. Normally I would remind folks about the fact you only get 3gb of useable storage, but now there is something new that affects the 4k and the 4kMax. I have a 4k that took a update and now goes to a boot-loop looking for a internet connection.

It happened to me a few weeks ago on a 4k (not the Max), but I read now that is because of a update they pushed. Amazon does know about it and trying to figure a solution. In some of the forums, some say just let it do its thing for days and it might come back on its own. I let it go for about 5 days before I gave up and wrote it off and put a DOA sticker on it for a trade in offer at some point since I hate the very limited storage anyway. What took my notice was it is not just me and the problem is more wide spread. I tried wired connections too. I suspect the update crashed do to some storage issue.

I know folk have ways to prevent updates. I kind of wish I knew more about that a month or 2 ago..

Lastly I must mention there seems to be a refresh coming to the whole line. Most think it will happen right before the October Prime day (dates not known yet). Lets hope at least double the current 8gb.

Good to know it's not just me. I just had a 4K bootloop a week ago after running without issue for the last year.

It did not work for me, but if you have a way to feed it wired internet, and leave it on for a few days "Some" have got them to come back to life. I have to think some how they will figure it out or replace them. If it can be proved the update killed them, possibly a class action? IDK, Argh.. I use cubes as my daily drivers. This one was in a unused room and had not been on for months.

I own mine for a weekish. I haven't see anything wrong yet. Everything updated. Only thing I really loaded was Kodi and Plex

After your post I started Googling and came across all the posts on Amazon about the issue. It seems widespread enough that at some point you'd think they'd have to replace them (although I'm sure they've been thinking of ways to not replace them since the second they became aware of the issue).

Unfortunately I don't have a way to hardwire mine, or an OTG cable to see if safe mode works. Even if I did, we shouldn't have to spend the time or effort to fix their mistake (even though I would, just so I didn't have to deal with them).

I'll be contacting Amazon and telling them to replace it.

I think they are going to say 1yr warranty and I am out of luck. I got that 4k stick when they first came out. It has the remote with out the 4 extra buttons.

Like I said "If" it can be proved a forced update killed them, then we are due something. I bet they offer 20% off a new one. hehehe.

If you get any where, be sure to drop a note on the outcome.

After a bit more thought, I think I did at one time have a external USB stick on that one. I recall to set up the drive 50% adoptable and 50% fat32 you had to run some commands via adb or putty (I forget). I am sure I have factory reset it several times since. I wonder if that hanky panky might be the cause.

Mine has been "stock" since Day 1, so more than likely it's a software update issue unrelated to what you did.

I won't be giving them a choice. They broke it, they bought it.

Considering there's an article about it on PCMag, it's only a matter of time before it becomes more mainstream and they can't just ignore it.

Just a heads up. I contacted Amazon about the issue. The rep didn't even put up a fight and just created a replacement order. It's being billed as $0 and not a discounted price so if I had to guess, they know they're going to get contacted about this and already have it set up to process exchanges.

We'll have to see as more people contact support, but it looks like it shouldn't be too difficult to get these devices replaced (although my guess is that unless you specifically tell them you want it replaced, they'll try to upsell you with a discount - typical Amazon).

Cool.. Do they want the dead one back or do they know yours is dead because your device is unreachable? Was there a department to contact or general number?

They provided me with a prepaid label to send the old one back. I just contacted chat support from the app/website. No special department as far as I'm aware.

FWIW.. Woot just had the 4k (not max) at $17 (email alert).. Unfortunately already sold out, but some times these bounce in and out of stock.. IDK, Ymmv.. I look for the $40 cubes. At $17 the 4k are worth it for just the remotes if you can find them on woot.
