It's to the point now where lower end laptops with win11 home can be had for similar prices.
So my question is $300 win11 home laptop or a $300 Chromebook for someone in their 80's (not me)

You would need at least 12 ddr with windows.

"Need" is a strong word. 4 GB with Windows could suck but 8 GB is probably fine for casual use.

I've used literally every Windows OS EXCEPT win11. On win10 8GB of RAM was what I considered too slow to use (CPU was older), 4GB on chrome ran MUCH snappier. That is my concern with win11..

Win10's huge monthly updates make it almost unusable for someone who leaves the computer off and may go 2-3 months without using it. Almost every time she turns it on it needs to update. I'm guessing win11 is similar?

A key factor in buying any chromebook is how long you will receive OS updates for.

You can check how long OS updates will be available any chromebook model here:
https://support.google.com/chrome...py=%2Casus

Choose the manufacturer from a list then search in page (ctrl-f) for the model name/number.

This model will receive updates through June 2031.Applause

Google is preparing to decouple the Chrome browser from ChromeOS so that the former can continue to receive updates even after official support ends for the latter:

https://www.aboutchromebooks.com/..._article=1

This is likely to extend the usability of ChromeOS devices indefinitely since the browser is where most of the action is and where the majority of security threats are. Devices with support ending around 2025 (like mine) may be able to hop aboard the LaCrOS train and ride it until they break.

My battery health is down to 52% so I might end up replacing it by then anyway, hoping for some better deals by then.

I've been a Google user for decades, whether it be Android, Chromebooks, Gmail, etc. and the advice that I would like to pass along is to not make today's purchasing decisions based on future promises by Google.

If they announce something and it's a "nice to have" then cool. But if it's a "must have" then purchasing that item or service is taking a huge gamble. I think this holds true for a lot of companies, but I put Google near the top of the list.

My family has been using Chromebooks for over 5 years. As a lifelong Windows user, I love the simplicity of the ChromeOS. The battery life on all of our machines has been outstanding. I would easily recommend a Chromebook for an 80 year old.

This particular model is a brand new release. There are some solid reviews about it:

Is there anything about having an AMD processor that limits the types of apps you can install on a Chromebook?
