Most store only refuse to participate because they lose money on sale. I had partial ownership of subway before and we had to close it down because at one point we were barely breaking even. Even i think some of the prices are ridiculous but it's either you have Subway or you don't. Also keep in mind inflation. The same 5 dollars you had from 2010 is like 8 dollars now. Then you include inflation, commercial rent increase (the same places we left charged us (originally 1500 a month when we started in 2008 2100 around the time we closed, after we closed down it was 2600 for the next guy)
suppliers jacking up prices and you have $10-15 footlong. The people that complains the loudest are those that don't understand the economics of the whole thing. Also if Subway finds that you have profitable store the will literally place a subway near that area as corp store and cannibalize your profits till they run you out of business. Also there nothing you can do about because it's in there franchise agreement. You also can't sue them and even if you could they have better lawyers than you. There entire business model is predatory. They expect you to take all the risk and once they find out that a location is profitable enough they will run you into the ground. Over the course of the 12 years I was involved I only netted around 140k. And that was with me still partially involved in the business. Basically that's why the prices are so high and why I heavily advise against purchasing a Subway as an "investment".

There is no worse of a franchise system than Subway. One of the few companies that would license two stores within visual distance of each other and force them to compete for 'the block'.

There's a John Oliver "Late Night Tonight" segment about Subway as a company on YouTube (and HBO/Max). As usual, it's a wonderful 20 minute exposé.

The subway franchise is one of the worst to own and the owners make a tiny margin, which is why many have the owner working in there and family members because at $16 an hour or more for help, they would lose money. One of the costs of increasing the minimum wage and of the "living wage" initiatives is that those $5 deals are gone and the price of a burger full meal deal is now $12+. So in the end, the service folks are making more but the prices went up for everything and the net effect is they are where they were before, or worse.

First Quizno's now Subway. It's only a matter of time before many more will close. The American palette has changed and demands better flavor and real freshness. Dollar for dollar most people would rather have Chipotle, or some other new fast casual place that does 1 or 2 things well than pay $12 for Subway.

I'm curious if the owners actually lose money on a $6 footlong. Is the contribution margin of a sub really $6? Hard to believe.
I have a friend that owns a franchise and yes they loose money on the BOGO. He disables it for his store as soon as a new code comes out. Its a tough business and very difficult to make profit unless your a high traffic store or you mostly have "family" working. He got into trouble as he was selling other food stuff in his store for a short time they caught him and gave him 1 warning.. Next infraction loose the franchise.

I think it's also the results of an incredibly successful ad campaign that has drilled the notion into many people's minds that a footlong from Subway is worth $5. They haven't even tried to get away from that with small increments based on inflation, like Little Caesars has done after it became no longer possible to sell Hot & Ready pizzas for $5. You can still get a Hot & Ready for like $6, no more than $7 at most locations. However, a Subway sub by my job in Michigan is $12.50. You can get a muuuuuuch better sub from a number of places at the same price point. Thankfully, there's a single Subway by my house that still accepts this promotion and has footlongs priced at $8. In for 1...err...2.

Probably won't matter much longer as they just got acquired by a private equity firm that will be focused on profitability going forward. Can't make money with people only buying with coupons.

For those who can get this offer, enjoy while you still can.
Yeah, saw that announcement - Roark Capital; Arby's, Baskin Robbins, Buffalo Wild Wings, Dunkin', Jimmy John's, and many others.

They better of not offering these coupons since none of the stores around here ever accept them. Just create a bad experience. Who is running Subway corporate?

Yep, none of the locations by me are accepting promos anymore. The owner works behind the counter at my closest location and I asked him about this. He said he loses money with the promos, also people won't buy chips or drinks with the bogo offers which are their best markups.
That's a hilarious claim -- wait, you lose money giving away a free sandwich? You don't say.

The point is -- you get people to come, and if you're cool and give them a great experience, they might come back -- and THAT -- Mr. Franchise Owner, is how you MAKE money from promotions. I love that instead, he acts like a dweeb and not you walk away without buying one. Tough lessons... Stick Out Tongue

I love these deals - I don't think I've paid full price for a Subway sub in like over a year. I refuse to pay like $10 for a sub that I used to pay $5 for.

Maybe there are too many people like me, who only go to Subway for promotions like these, because Subway is trash. *shrug*

Even with the promo, it still seems expensive to me. I can go to the deli section of my grocery store and buy a few things for $12 that are on sale and make a few footlongs.

I expect they're making a small per unit profit. But making a few cents on a sandwich won't keep the rent paid, pay salaries, etc.. So it's still possible they can't afford to take the coupons and stay in business.

When you're out and about, you'd rather go to the grocery store to get the ingredients, chop everything up, and make the sandwich? Okay.

It's been forever since I've been to Subway. A regular price veggie sub is now $10? geez.
