Cave Story is something super special. I originally back when it was freeware floating around the internet, and the English translation was fan driven. It was created by a single person, everything from programing to music.
The game plays well, is huge with a good amount of playtime, good story(if a bit opaque) and has(spoilers) multiple different endings.
For anyone a fan of good games, this is a must play. It wont be everyone's cup of tea, but for free there shouldn't be any reason not to give it a try.
Just curious soes anyone actually play any of the free games they get? I only ask because I probably have 200+ free games from the Epic store ( and just got one more ) yet I have never ever even installed the Epic games launcher and downloaded a single one. Same with the 2000 free Amazon Ebooks I have gotten over the years

Interesting it says I already own it. Maybe it was free before?
Yes, it was free before. Epic has gone through quite a few repeats this last year which is a good thing for those who missed games the first time around. No complaints here as btw Steam and Epic, there's too many backlogs.

You may be on to something. I do occasionally read a free ebook. But while I keep planning to try the games, I haven't gotten there yet.
Homeworld RTS looks very interesting — it reminds me a lot of Cavedog's Total Annihilation. There really hasn't been a game like TA (other than maybe Supreme Commander) since then.
The Cave Story game looks like another indie loser rip off of the old NES and SNES side scrollers. Back in the 1980s the technology limited games to this format and right through until 1995 or so there were a lot of really good and innovative games in this genre including games on PC like Jazz Jackrabbit. But really this genre is so passé and the technology allows for so much more — that these indie rip offs are a hard pass.

Cave Story is an amazing metroid-style game, I had so much fun playing it. But there's an alternate optional boss that I could never beat (without cheating) because the difficulty ramps up SUPER hard in both platforming and difficult boss mechanics. Also, the best weapon is received through a sidequest that could easily be accidentally skipped, and at some point, you can't return to grab it (whoopsies).
All in all, great game. I personally enjoyed it more than Axiom Verge and the controls felt very fluid.

I can appreciate the creative effort— and this game might be an exception — but it seems like 80% of free games are 2D side scrollers that all look the same.
Cave Story is epic. I remember playing it like 15 years ago and it was a total nostalgia trip. Totally made me feel like I uncovered some lost gem from the SNES/Genesis days. Everyone bashing it clearly hasn't played it, as demonstrated by comments like "dumb side scroller" as opposed to pointing out anything specifically wrong with the game.

The name of the game is "Collecting Games"
I haven't installed Epic Launcher either, and I've been collecting their free games ever since they started.

I have played some of them, but these days it's usually just the ones that are available via GeForceNow.

Nah, Cave Story is well regarded, and the original version was freeware. It may be responsible for spawning those "rip offs" you hate though:
Cave Story is considered to be one of the most influential video games to be released between the mid-2000s and the mid-2010s. The game had an impact on the indie game industry, with its acclaim and success demonstrating that a one-person team could rival major studios. It is also one of the most internationally successful Japanese indie (dōjin soft) games, and contributed to the resurgence of the Metroidvania genre. The game's critical acclaim demonstrated the scope of what one person could do, and highlighted another take on the Metroidvania genre. It also vitalized the 2D platform game genre as a viable indie game format.
The success of Cave Story paved the way for a large number of retro-themed 2D platformers that have appeared since the mid-2000s. Jonathan Holmes of Destructoid called Cave Story an "important game", observing its influence on artistic indie games like Braid or Meat Boy, as well as the continued relevance of 2D game design (cf. Capcom's Mega Man 9).

I just enjoy collecting the free games. Sure I might not play most, but one day I might play some and I'll have it for free.
