i wouldn't recommend this for her. not due to battery life, but due to weight.
Agreed, these are behemoths. A bad option if you need to be dragging it around or taking it out in class. These are more for development / engineers that will mostly keep it on their desk.

I wouldn't choose these for mobile though construction is good , i can't imagine battery life being decent, lattitude line would have solid build and and be better for mobility.

The age and capabilities. It's like asking what makes a racecar better than a high dollar Lexus from 10 years ago....
Both have fine engines and will get you from point a to b, but what matters is the race you need to win....
if you aren't racing (GPU intensive task,) this might work fine but slower.
