Me and the wife were seriously considering going here for our tenth anniversary next year. It looks really nice. The only caveat is flying out of Atlanta to Maldives takes over 24 hours one way!!! Maybe once we retire, but like the wife said "over 48 hours in the air doesn't feel too vacationy" :-)

Just came back from the Maldives last week. It's DEFINITELY a lot of traveling, and not a convenient place to get to. But the resorts and Maldives themselves were beautiful.

It helps to bookend the trip with other stops. Singapore, Hong Kong, etc are easy flights from the Maldives. You can also fly Air France (Delta codeshare, which may be convenient for you in Atlanta) and add a stop in Paris, for example.

I did this last year. I was already in Singapore for work and it was a quick and fairly cheap flight to the Maldives. Then stopped in Paris on the way home.

I'd personally never visit Maldives from the US due to the travel time. I honeymooned there because we traveled from Dubai, which was only a 4.5 hour flight to Male. So if you're ever in that region, I'd highly recommend a trip to the Maldives

It's not a problem if you're sitting in the front of the plane. 265,000 points later, first class all the way!

I visited Maldives twice (once from dfw and once from sfo). I would highly recommend a much longer (2 weeks or preferably a 4 weeks) vacation considering the duration of flight/jet lag .... I have not stayed at this particular property but I do not think this is a deal at all.

I've been to the Maldives 5 nights free at the Conrad with points. Still don't think it was that much better to other places in SEA. Airfare to Male then a plane/boat transfer to the resort was almost 2k per person when I went. I've also been to Thailand and Philippines and it's pretty similar for much less cost. Did some snorkeling at the Maldives and all the coral near the beach are bleached. Maybe if you booked an excursion further out the coral would be better.

is there a catch here for this price? genuinely curious
or is it mostly the season/weather? or the travel time?

Maldives is certainly a bit overrated ( been there 3 times, two of them in last 5 years.) Each time the reef was not the same as it was before and in a worse way. The trash and construction (fueled by Chinese influence) are real issues imho. Hawaii, on the other hand, is showing significant progress in recovering the reef health. Haven't been to bora bora yet, but I would perhaps consider one of the Polynesian islands over Maldives for next beach vacation.

If you don't like long flights you can break it up with 12 hours being the longest. Not saying is for everyone but here's what we did and we loved it. This is better for east coast people (in my case BOS) It's also not cheap but not exorbitantly expensive.

You can get some decent flights from EU hubs to Male through Qatar. Especially if you have points.

You can get some nice hotels in Male for 99 dollars a night.

We got an Iceland air deal. Added a layover on the way back to break up our flights.

Fly to Paris via Iceland. Leave Friday evening, ideally sleep on the flight, wake up and land in paris around 1pm. Look at the Eiffel Tower, have dinner, sleep get up and to the airport the next day. Bonus if you can find a hotel with breakfast or perks for you.

Paris to Male in the afternoon Sunday (12 hour flight) Arrive Monday at 7AM. Check into hotel and pass out. Wake up, eat dinner, sleep in MLE at a cheap but nice enough hotel (we stayed at H78, it included breakfast and a ride to and from the MLE airport.

Fly out to your resort the next day, enjoy your trip.

Catch your return flight to your EU hub, Paris in this example. Fly to Iceland, enjoy 3 day layover (or 1 day) See the golden circle or just enjoy Reykjavik.

Fly back to east coast. You get to see 3 countries.

I think you can squeeze this in and only take 8 days off if you bookended it with weekends.

Highly recommend taking a hole day off on your return if you do this.
