I started smoking with one of these. They work alright but the temps are very scattered. They pitch it as a "set it and forget it" deal but I ran into problems with major temp spikes, low temps, etc and it took longer to cook meat. On some cooks, the charcoal would burn out and I'd have to add more and these weren't even that long of cooks (boston butts). The meat turned out decent and it was good to start out and realize I enjoyed smoking but I prefer more control over temperature than these things provide.

I've had two of the 18.5" ones. They cook really well, but first was original model (not powder coated) and bottom rusted through after < 5 years. Newer model (powder coated) has it's first hole in the bottom after 5 years. Once this one rusts bad enough that I can't use it, I'm getting a pellet smoker instead.

Brother in law cooks on one of these and consistently turns out great ribs and whole chickens.. very minimal effort to tend the fire.

Why? Do you live in an HOA where charcoal grills are not allowed or something?

For this price I highly prefer pellet smokers. These weather really poorly. At first I thought I'd store and take care of it but with all grills smokers etc I keep them outside on the deck due to laziness. Well this one doesn't last long from the elements

Also had a pre-powder coat version, bought this package in 2014 for $289. I know things have gotten more expensive since then but no way would I pay $600 for it especially when you can get a Kamado Joe Classic for less than that.

The device made good ribs but required that you use a full basket of Kingsford briquettes every time. Didn't have a lot of flexibility in cooking and things like temperature regulation was controlled by a metal round plate that was held in place with a screw that eventually rusted out.

I think if you're into making a LOT of food at once (several racks of ribs) it's a decent option but if you want more flexibility in doing different kinds of meats and want a grill/smoker then a kamado or pellet grill is a better option.

I have four 55 gallon drums in the backyard now. They were free.

Seriously, just build a UDS. This thing is way overpriced

100% agree with this. My 18.5 just sits collecting dust as I have moved on to a masterbuilt gravity. Another con of the PBC is that you cannot snuff out the fire and when your food is done, you have to wait for the coals to burn out so you must waste perfectly good fuel. Save the money and get something else.

Haven't used this one but I have the Oklahoma Joe Bronco which is a similar design but you can shut the vents at the end and the fire goes out. I also have a Masterbuilt Gravity and had a RecTeq pellet cooker. Pellets are convenient but no where near the flavor of charcoal and wood chunks. The MB Gravity is best of both but build quality is subpar. Mine is crumbling away after 3 years.

This is not for incinerating bodies, it's for food preparation.
