Is this a good upgrade from a 3600 or would the X3D chip be better?
If you have a high-higher end GPU then you will beneifit from the 5800X or better 5800X3D. As far as is this a deal? No. You might as well upgrade to the X3D that can be had for $270 for a final ride.

I saw that basically the 5700x and 5800x are basically the same price right now. 5800x is a lot better for identical price. Hopefully that means 5700x can be like 150$ 😎
"Cooler not included, high-performance cooler recommended"
How much will that cost?
I would recommend a thermalright peerless assassin dual tower cooler. Highly rated from gamers nexus. I got one. And the included thermal paste is actually some of the best thermal paste I've ever used. You can get one of those 30-35 depending on the style
They have RGB ones. Black and white. I went with white RGB. There's non RGB ones as well
i have been running this chip a few years. it is a hot boy but manageable. my ambient temps are high but my case cooling is good.
with a dark rock 4 cooler, i am running PPT 95, TDC 60, EDC 90. this nets 4.4ghz and between 70 and 80c in cinebench. YMMV. google "pbo 5800x" for more info.
that said, i paid much more than this and am happy with the chip, but idk if this is a deal when you factor in needing serious cooling and some tweaking to get it humming.

You'll be paying 40% more for about 9% more average performance at 1440p compared to 5800X.

Hopefully, but don't hold your breath. The 5700X seems to go on sale the least out of all the 5000 series chips.

That said - is it worth it?
1440p res on a 27" Acer, RTX 2080, 16GB RAM, ASRock B450M motherboard. It doesn't need to be absolute max quality, but some AA and AF would be nice.
