I have no amex points cards, but this deal and the frequent amazon deals make me think I should get one. Already have many cards, including chase reserve, which is a logical amex card to get my feet into the amex points system? Thumbs up and thank you.

I'd suggest starting with a Gold Card. It has some nice perks that offset the annual fee. Platinum is aimed more a frequent travelers and has a very high annual fee. Try to find a referral link (or ask someone for one) which has a higher bonus offer. There was an offer for 90k points on the gold recently, not sure I'd that's still live.
Just curious are you using this to use the points before closing the card?
Nope, I just had a bunch of points to use. We renovate properties, so HD discounted gift cards are a perk. I've had my amex cards for over 25 years... would never get rid of it.

Gold is good if you dine out a lot, and best rewards rate on grocery purchases too
