Not as amazing as the Apple education discount as there is no $100 Apple gift card, but for those who are not edu qualified, not bad.

But note that in the USA, Apple doesn't enforce Edu Store purchases. Yes, you have to state you are in Edu program (there are a few stipulations), but if you can ethically click that, you can get a M2 Mini for $499 and get a $100 gift card.

Better for many, you can also configure it with 16GB, and get the same $100 gift card.

That, particularly the ability to configure it AND get both discounts, is compelling.

They do verify ID in store unfortunately.

Some have seen this, some not. The obvious answer is simply to buy it online, and either pick up in store (no checks) or have it delivered. No issues.

They are not supposed to because the discount is also applicable to someone buying for a student without the student present. If they are asking for proof, you may want to speak to the manager.

How future proof will this thing be with only 8 GB RAM with no option to upgrade?

Again, go to the Apple Edu Store, upgrade it to anything you wish.

But most people will be plenty happy with 8GB.

I have 8GB on my MacBook which still works fine, although I only do light tasks on it. I purchased it in 2020, but I would absolutely not buy an 8GB machine in 2023. I'd say you want 16GB or more at this point at a minimum if you're thinking at all about future proofing.

I agree. Got a m1 air 8gb and periodically I need to close some apps etc. it's still great but I would consider 16gb especially for any serious usage.

My question is not what I'm doing with it today, but 5-10 years from now. I have a late 2012 mac mini that I was able to bring back to life by adding some RAM several years ago. But I can't with this model. It makes me want to just buy a used 2018 so I can at least upgrade it when I want.

I have not. I'm used to PCs where you can upgrade what you want. But my wife likes macs.
