Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Contractor's Mix is an all-purpose mix for sunny and shady areas. This mix works to quickly repair bare areas. In addition, each seed is coated to absorb 2X more water than uncoated seed. Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Contractor's Mix is designed for full sun and light shade, and has a coarse bladed texture with medium drought resistance. It can be used to seed a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn. For best results, apply in the spring or fall when air temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 80°F. We recommend using a Scotts spreader to apply this product (please refer to spreader settings on product label). Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall. One 20 lb. bag of Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Contractor's Mix has a new lawn coverage of 2,665 sq. ft. and an overseeding coverage of 8,000 sq. ft.

All those seed bags come with only about 50% of it seed. The rest of the weight is inert matter or the coating. You're getting screwed buying seed like this. Go to your local green house or landscaping place and get a bag with 97%+ seed
Very tempted, but the local Virginia Tech guide does not highly recommend any of the seed varieties for my area. Looking at the tag: Kizzle is a Category 2 (which is a maybe per VT) seed, but no Category 1 seeds listed on the bag. Duration and Tough aren't even listed by VT. The other budget brand, Pennington Rebels, has 2 Tier I seeds (with the higher percentages) on the bag, so I'm gonna stick with that. I got the big bag of it on sale for $50 a couple weeks ago. Seeds do matter.

My local hardware store sells a seed blend specifically for my township. I bet other places do the same.

U still need to go buy the other stuff too then. Same difference?

Correct. Something to take into account. Actually it's tough to find JUST seed unless it's contractor's grade which is trash. Usually have to go to Tractor Supply for that.

Thanks - I'm in Alexandria. Are you in the beltway? Do you have a local place you source this stuff from?
We have a hill we dug out and replanted with grass this summer, and the grass was completely overrun with crabgrass. I need some help from an expert on how to kill the crabgrass and start over, and want to use good seed!

I have used both Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra (uncoated seed) and Newsom Trio from Newsom Seed (Fulton, MD). In theory, the Black Beauty contains more "other" and "weed" seed IIRC. However, I have not noticed a single difference in my 2/3 acre yard. Newsom is only open 7:30-4 M-F, the same time most people are working. 50 lb bag is $128 and total is $180 after shipping and tax to VA. Black Beauty can be found at Ace Hardware or shipped to your house from Amazon, great for smaller bags...the 50 lb bag is $251, which ends up costing more than the locally sourced seed.
Perferredseed dot com comes in a canvas bag with the seed name written in sharpie. It smells very fresh has a close to 100% germination rate in my experience based on my results and they have the best cultivars.

I've used both with great results and no weed seeds. Never had much luck with Scott's their coating is really thick.
