Did you have to go MLB-ATL-LHR-EDI, or has Delta officially started nonstops to EDI from ATL? I know they have a nonstop to MAN via Virgin but that's as close as you could get to Scotland without another connection. We did BHM-LHR in the spring for about $650 BE, $800 main.
Piggybacking onto your point, searching some secondary airports can really cut down the cost. Our trips from BHM (when connecting thru ATL) are often 2/3 the cost of an ATL-origin flight. It's crazy to get a discount for convenience, but always worthwhile to search outside of the major airports just to see what comes up.
Makes Skymiles totally worthless.

You can fly from other airports in Europe, and the fees will be lower - often much lower.

1 cent per mile. I use cash if the cost for a flight is at that or lower. I'll use miles if the cash cost is significantly higher. For example, I looked at an East coast flight earlier this year. With cash it was about $300. With miles it was 18,000 plus tax ($10), which made the flight the equivalent cost of $190 (about 1.6 cents per mile).
