I hate this practice that airlines are doing where they charge you to assign a seat. Sure it's 28,000 miles, but it's 54,000 if you want an assigned seat in the main cabin.

I've been shopping London and Paris fares lately and have seen $550-$650 pretty regularly for fall and spring. Every single time I try to use miles for Delta and AA, it ends up being a lot of fees for very little, and we end up paying cash.

Racked up Delta miles since '98 and still hasn't made sense to redeem any

True, but at least taxes and fees get rolled into the cash price for easier comparison.

Did you have to go MLB-ATL-LHR-EDI, or has Delta officially started nonstops to EDI from ATL? I know they have a nonstop to MAN via Virgin but that's as close as you could get to Scotland without another connection. We did BHM-LHR in the spring for about $650 BE, $800 main.

Piggybacking onto your point, searching some secondary airports can really cut down the cost. Our trips from BHM (when connecting thru ATL) are often 2/3 the cost of an ATL-origin flight. It's crazy to get a discount for convenience, but always worthwhile to search outside of the major airports just to see what comes up.
Yes indeed. I think MCO is higher because of all the tourist traffic. We did ATL - EDI in 7 and 1/2 hours. 8.15 hours on the return so not much of a problem with the jet stream. Check out FlightAware dal flight 34 and flight 35 for the history.

If I apply their CC, would I get miles to cover this 28K ?
Yeah you could, though SkyPesos are pretty worthless (as demonstrated by this deal). Not worth wasting your time if you're just going to redeem for economy flights. May as well pay cash or use one of the transferable currency portals to go to LHR than waste a pull for a Delta card to burn 30k points and $200 each way.

Especially when a low cost carrier is charging $300 for the ticket they are charging 28K miles for + $200 taxes.

Makes Skymiles totally worthless.

London has very high airport fees, it's called "Sock it to the tourist".

You can fly from other airports in Europe, and the fees will be lower - often much lower.

SLC round trip is 29k miles (after 15% cc miles discount) plus $207 fees. A lot of availability until mid February.

Sure that $300 ticket was inclusive of all taxes/fees?

Very true. Last week went to London and my friend dropped me off at Gatwick airport and there is a surcharge for airport drops and pickups.

Can someone enlighten what's approximate cash conversion for the Delta Skymiles. Just started accumulating miles and wondering how much they are worth before I think about redeeming...

1 cent per mile. I use cash if the cost for a flight is at that or lower. I'll use miles if the cash cost is significantly higher. For example, I looked at an East coast flight earlier this year. With cash it was about $300. With miles it was 18,000 plus tax ($10), which made the flight the equivalent cost of $190 (about 1.6 cents per mile).
