There are a bunch of RTX 4050/60 laptops at $800-$1000 price point.

I'm trying to get a laptop for work and fun, and I haven't had one for almost ten years, so the landscape is very different now. I am unsure of how much of a difference generations of processors make, or how drastically video cards change from year to year.

I had an ASUS TUF A15 for a week, but the placement of the charging slot (dead center on the left side) was too asinine for me to keep it. It kept digging into my leg and getting pulled too easily. Besides that, I really enjoyed everything about it.

I found a Dell G16 here that arrived today, and it's pretty slick. My main complaint so far is no numpad (stupid, I know, but I use them a ton for work) and a gargantuan charging brick. That's pretty easy to ignore, so it's not a dealbreaker. It came with a GeForce RTX 3060, but it's been a pain so far to make Windows use that instead of the Iris Xe onboard. I'm open to finding something better for me though. This seems like it'd be a slight step down but nothing too drastic, anyone have any opinions on it?

for getting games and software to use the rtx 3060 instead of the integrated graphics, make sure you have nvidia control panel set to prefer high performance dedicated graphics in global settings. you'll still likely encounter the integrated graphics framebuffer issue, causing diagonal corner to corner screen tearing that all nvidia+intel optimus laptops suffer from, as the optimus path for video feed goes through the integrated graphics, and between nvidia, intel, and microsoft, they all just point the blame for the issue at one another and say those guys need to fix it, not me. edit: suposedly there's nvidia advanced optimus now that fixes that, but I'm not sure what laptops have that, if it's only those labeled as advanced optimus.

as for this laptop, the 3050 is a pretty huge step down from the 3060, even going from a 3060 to a 3050 ti mobile is a large enough downgrade to really notice. unless you're only playing much older AAA games (from xbox360/ps3 era), indie titles and certain new games that have modest requirements, you'll probably regret going from a 3060 to a 3050. Lenovo's ultra budget offerings tend to have bad screens, and the color accuracy on this one isn't great, but it doesnt seem too bad. freesync is a huge value add, especially with lower end gpus, it'll match the gpu frames being pushed in real time, which drops latency dramatically. 45-60fps unlocked refresh rate gameplay with async tech like freesync/gsync still controls like solid 60.
