I'm almost 40yrs old, and I've seen and watch TONS of movies, including being an AMC stubs member. A lot of people are slamming me but I watched this movie at the theater without having any expectation of it. And the movie made me laugh, cry at certain points uncontrollably, Sci-Fi elements, action. I think it also had to do with in upbringing of my childhood and never feeling I was enough. The constant struggle of the wife always looking for more, taking her husband for an idiot, when she had everything she needed all along. It was a very deep sentimental experience for me Coupled with the fact I'm a huge action and Sci-Fi fan with loads of hilarious ridiculousness. I've never seen a movie where, I'm laughing and crying at the same time. Paid full price upon release and have seen it 4 times total.
EEAAO #1 and probably Marcel the Shell with Shoes on were my favorite movies of 2021

Yes! Have to give a shout out for mentioning Marcel the Shell. So amazing.
I liked it for how unpredictable and different it was. It was a wild fun ride with elements of everything and every emotion one could ever get from a movie .
Is it the greatest movie ever. No.
Is it a recent favorite. No, probably not.
But it was an overall good entertaining experience.

I've only watched the movie once but really enjoyed it. But think I'll wait to see if the 4k hits $10 or less (maybe during BF sales).
Also I wish people would stop crap posting in movie threads saying they hated the movie when obviously the deal isn't for them. Taste in movies is 100% subjective.
I think it can helpful to people that haven't seen a movie yet to see both the positive and negative reactions to a film before purchase. Especially for those pieces of media that are given very high praise.
this movie is good but it dragged on and got a little too pretentious and overdramatic for its own good in the 2nd half IMO. a couple of the jokes were complete cringe whiffs as well, but most were enjoyable. it had potential to be amazing but fell short. still definitely worth a watch.

There's plenty of other places to read reviews... SD is the last place I look for opinions on movies. Also I rarely buy a movie blind. I'll watch it via theater or streaming, and then buy it later if I really liked it and want to watch again.
But after seeing a critic's commentary/analysis about it, I came to understand there is a much deeper meaning in terms of nihilism to the movie that I didn't get at first. I think most critics rated high based on this deeper message, not the cheesy action parts. The point of the movie is to be ridiculously absurd to show nihilism, but the ultimate message is that meaning in life is what you make of it.
^This exactly!
The film is layered with deeper concepts and metaphors but delivered through a veil of cheesiness and tongue-in-cheek humour as a means to contrast the absurdity and "tragic comedy" of the circumstances of events (i.e. Family chaos/breakdown, the immigrant experience, Paternal vs. Child relationships, societal obligations, etc)
I'm seriously inclined to believe that everyone who got nothing from it are those who were looking for a cheesy comedy and unwilling to peel back a bit to discover the uncomfortable and deep concepts the film tries to highlight.

The movie also handled multi-verse ideas better than any Marvel or DC movie so far. Well, except for maybe the Spider-man animated movies.

And yet you gave your opinion on it in your initial comment.
Looks like you expounded on that opinion in another comment also.

SD users love to yuck other people's yum. It's like they believe SD users are walking around with cash in hand, looking to shove it at something they've never heard of — like SD users aren't putting thought into where they spend their money.
Get over yourselves. We're here to buy what we like. You don't have to like it. It's also not your job to tell other people what to do with their money.

As a long-time SDer myself…I'm just inclined to believe that a lot of people on here are looking for that short-term dopamine hit and not thorough enough to gather a broader, holistic perspective on items/products/issues/topics.
The lack of ability to discern a false "deal" vs not, and the lack of recognizing deeper conceptualizations through film aren't that far apart.

They lost me at dildo-numchucks... /sad
Actually paid to watch the movie in a theater. Walked out in the middle
On Showtime, had to turn it off on the dildo-numchucks scene
Tried to watch again, but gave up again.
I guess I don't get it..
Same for me, I got to the point with the rocks talking and quit. Was extremely bored by that point so like you I guess I also don't get the movie or the appeal.
Great movie. Excellent themes. Incredible directing. It's very layered and the directors expect more from the audience than most Hollywood movies. At its core it's a family drama so it has very limited appeal to a lot of people.

I agree, but have you seen Jet Li's "The One"?
