With 4TB coming in better drives (990 Pro) with others to follow, I see 2TB as the minimum one should be buying for almost all cases.

Now I myself will prefer only purchasing 2TB drives and will of course want even higher capacity drives to fall in price, but that doesn't mean that 1TB drives aren't suitable for most people who have more than 1 NVME slot.

Been using SSDs for a long time (8 years now) so I understand the market, but you're right if it's for a desktop with dual slots it may be OK for some people.
Laptops are often so hamstrung with small, cheap drives so replacement is usually warranted, at least for those of us that are heavy users with large files. The cost of 2TB drives is fantastic compared to even a year ago so it's just a "why not" situation (ex: I bought a 2TB SKH P-31 (Gen 3) for $160 on sale, but I bought another for an external for $92 about a month ago. Sometimes it costs more per TB if you increase size, but when larger is less, it becomes an easy decision.
I may have to buy another laptop soon, and if I do, I'll go with a 2TB minimum, and possibly a 4TB (990 Pro) if available and if I can get the right deal. I'm already having to clean off the 2TB drives, which is kind of a PITA.
** I do weekly offloads anyway, but I'm talking about stuff I want available most of the time.

I guess this doesn't compare performance wise. it's double the capacity for $8 still stands
