I just picked up one in Tustin, CA. Posting because the previous deal was only for Space Gray. This deal is for the Silver color which is usually more desirable and kinda rare to see in a deal. I confirmed the laptop comes in a sealed Apple Certified Refurbished box so it's good like new (battery cycle count = 6). I used Microcenter CC for additional 5% off. Out of the door cost was $1330, thought it was pretty good especially IMO the base M1 Pro 14" is better than the comparable base M2 one.

Amazing deal. Also to point out that the 16inch is only $100 more. Crazy prices.

Man I might have to offload my m2 air with only 8gb for the 16". I could use the bigger screen and more ram for VM's.

I like this deal better for a hundred bucks more... https://slickdeals.net/f/16920973-apple-m1-pro-10-core-chip-16gb-unified-memory-1tb-solid-state-drive-16-core-gpu-16-core-neural-engine-microcenter-only-1399

For the same price, you can get the 16" screen for half the ram https://www.microcenter.com/produ...space-gray

Still a decent deal if you need a laptop now that's future proofed for 5-8 years. If you can wait for M3 to be announced + 3 months, you can gamble on the market/sales prices to lower another hundred bucks.

But for haloed 16gb condition that isn't stock, I think you have to wait longer than if it were just 8GB. Extra hdd space is nice too.

PS it's a crime for Apple to sell their Pro lines with 8gb configs.

Yeah I really like that deal too, would have returned mine if it was in Silver. I really like the Silver color as Space Gray doesn't age well.

People need to stop buying this until the price gets lowered. It's almost 2024 and a 2021 laptop at this price is not a good deal. This should be at max 1k.

Or just sit out and miss it, your choice. Keep in mind these are discountinued and at some point won't be available anymore.

The year model is just a number that might or might not mean anything. Some can argue that the base 2021 M1 pro is better all around than the 2023 M2 equivalent, does that still make it obsolete? I know for the same price I would pick the base M1 variant over M2.

Why? Granted, the youtube kids found that one particular disk test among many, sequential disk IO, is slower on the base M2, but that random IO is faster, and the CPU and GPU are about 20% faster on the M2. Why pick the slower M1 if price is the same?

I don't think the M2 is worth the price premium - particularly once MC's Apple CPO pricing is taken into account. But at the same price, I'd take the faster M2 in a heartbeat.

Why you keep saying that? Are you aware the only M2 that is *slower* in some task is the M2 with the 256GB HDD.

The base 14 M2 comes with 512GB hdd and it is not slower in any way over the M1. Only the 256GB drive.

You have been misinformed, the 14" M2 uses single channel 512GB SSD as well.

Base M1 14" SSD has 2x the speed of base M2, M1 unit has better cooling system (doing a quick research will explain). At full throttle M1 14" runs 10C cooler than the base M2 14" even when the M1 fan runs at lower RPM, this translates to the longevity and comfort of the whole unit.

These things are important to me, maybe they're not as important to you.

Please provide a (written) source for "2x speed" of base M2. In all things, or in just sequential disk IO, which isn't nearly as important as random disk io, which is about the same between the two? This is so tired; it was a thing a year ago, and everyone has since realized the M2 is still far faster, even if there's exactly one disk benchmark amongst many that the M1 is faster at. Come on people!

Please provide a (written) source for 10c cooler number.

I'm not obligated to provide anything, I spent time doing research for my own due diligence. I have said all I needed to, and as I said these things are important to me and if they don't matter to you kindly move on.

I think by now most people are pretty familiar with the facts:

The M2 is a nice jump faster than the M1, CPU and GPU. Around 20% for each. Not massive, but if it's a choice between each, the M2 is clearly faster.

The M2 does have a different SSD setup, so for sequential disk io (if you have to copy a single big file to a thunderbolt ssd all day long for your job, for instance) the SSD in the M1 is faster. Otherwise, for random io tasks, the SSDs are about the same, or the M2 SSD is a little faster. Obviously, most people will care most about random io, as that's what the OS & apps mostly use.
