If you try to return just the phone, you'll end up getting charged the full $379 for the tab.
I've tried it before, it doesn't work. Their system recognizes the "bundle" discount you receive for purchasing more than one item.
It works well with a portable battery bank too.

What folks are missing here, discussed in the other thread, is that getting both is "free" right now because there's a $200 difference per device for trading in the newer generation versus the prior generation.
