Sorry for writing a novel, but I hope this helps.

Guitar comparisons typically aren't a thing. The thing with guitars is, it's going to come down to your personal preferences. Sure, some of them have more expensive pickups or a higher quality wood, etc… but it's the player who makes it sound good, and each person's preference. Your Strat and this guitar are two completely different types of guitar, and are going to sound and feel different. Neither is better or worse than the other.

I'm assuming yours has 3 single coil pickups, right? The small pickups, rather than these brick-like ones. This guitar has humbucker pickups, which give a more beefy/deep sound. I swear by humbuckers. I won't touch single coil. However, this is where the preference thing comes into play. SO MANY GUITARISTS play single coil. Neither one is better than the other. It's all about what sound you like. Each style pickup is better for certain sounds. So, it's all about what sound you're trying to achieve.

If you have the money, I'd say get it. Every guitarist should try as many different types of guitars as they can to really see what they like. I have a several guitars ranging between $200 and $1,000, that have much different sounds and feels, and my $400 Tom DeLonge Fender Squire Strat is still my favorite. I just love the tone and feel.

Gretsch makes fantastic guitars, so even though I can't tell you if you'll like it more, you'll at least get a quality product.

Good for learning? Could a 9 year old handle this size or better to go with a smaller sized guitar? I see it's JR but not that much smaller- Thanks for any info-

I have a real Bigsby on my ES-335 and honestly, other than the patina on the metal and the pronouncement of the Bigsby logo, the licensed one on my Gretsch 5610T is an almost identical design. There's not a lot too them- a plate, a spring, a hinge, and a lever. Since Fender bought them they're more into marketing their retro vibe than innovation, so they're basically cookie-cutting these things now.

BTW, a good tip for first time Bigsby users: add some oil to the nut on your guitar so the strings don't get stuck. This is the main caused of the famous "they cause your guitar to go out of tune!" complaint. Also lift the lever up and take out the new spring, then step on it 50 times (don't do this barefoot...don't ask laugh out loud). . This will break it in and make it a lot more responsive.

The 2655 will be VERY good for learning. It's not a big guitar like the 5000 and 6000 series, and the setup is easy on the fingers. You can also get decent acoustic tones out of it. This would make an excellent first electric guitar.

From one newbie (who has mostly stopped playing) to another, i found the biggest difference going from my cheapo guitar to a most costly one was kinda the "feel". Of the guitar. I had a fender squire (strat style) which i had for years. I eventually switched to a epiphone ES 335. The biggest difference i saw from going to chepo->something that costs much more was that the neck was much more comfortable in my hands. It was wider, there was a bit more spacing between the strings for my fat fingers, and the action(?) was a lot easier. It was significant easier for me to bar and hold my left fingers to play notes. On the cheap squire i really and to squeeze. My fingers would always be rubbing up on other strings accidently as well on the squire strat.

This would have been a good learning guitar if not for Bigsby, which has big impact on tuning, setup and playability. This Bigsby contraption is not something that a beginner player should be dealing with.

if using vintage style pickups, I find the gretsch humbucker type to give the clearest clean sound , and the single coils give a more dirty and agressive sound. This is noteworthy because, usually the characteristics of those two types of pickups would be exactly opposite than on a gretsch laugh out loud

The 2622 body is sized similar to a Gibson/Epi 335 while the 2655 is sized similar to a Gibson/Epi 339. They are both full size semi-hollow guitars. Also the 2655 has a Bigsby b50 while the 2622 has a Bigsby B70.

I recall reading on some guitar blog that the bearings/bushings differ between the "real" and licensed versions and there's subsequently a different "feel" between them. I can't confirm that inasmuch as I have only one Bigsby (a B70 on my 2622T.)

It's a completely different experience. The neck on the Gretsch is wider and the frets are larger. It's also a flatter neck. The Gretsch also has more acoustic feedback, and it will sound more "full and chimey" than a Strat. It's it's a different tool in the toolbox.

I'm assuming this guitar will resonate/sing a little bit due to the smaller size and semi-hollow nature/humbuckers. Anyone with experience care to chime in? I'm looking for a semi-hollow in something more modern than Gibson 125 I keep stored away.

Get it. Put it on your wall. Grab it when you want to jam. Best advice, google some videos. You probably won't have the same set up as the players there but at least you'll get the gist of what it does. I mean it's cheap as hell and looks nice.

Is your Gibson a thinlline (i.e., 125T rather than a 125 full body?) If not, I think you'd be looking at a very different kind of critter with the Gretsch. Even if yours is a 125T, the absence of a center block renders it different from the Gretsch. Lastly, the bouts on the Gretsch 2655 are much smaller than the Gibson's. At these insanely low prices, why not try the Gretsch? If you don't like it you can probably get your many back (and then some) on the used market a ways down the road. I have a 2622T and but am considering picking up one of these for the smaller body. I'd perhaps keep it and sell the 2622T.. (I have an Epi 335 so the 2622T is dispensable. I bought if mostly for the Bigsby since I'd never had one.)

I have a similar Gretsch from when they were a little pricier and made in Korea and it's one of the best guitars I've ever played. Feels so amazing.

Not sure how they are now that they make them to sell a little more affordably but they seem really nice.
