Its good use case is if you don't keep your car in the garage all the time, but still need to store it in there sometimes. At least one wall that's directly adjacent to the garage's opening often goes unused because there's hardly any space between the wall and the car's side mirror.

Now you can have an extra workbench instead of just an empty wall.
Took some digging:
This one (41") is 3/4" thick, 48" was 1-1/4"
Menards has a longer (48"), thicker (1.5"), stronger (500lb) version for $88.

Could be a good option if you need the extra length (and you have a Menards in your area}.

This one is only 27lbs vs. 62lbs for the other $75 deal that sold out... is this one that lesser duty than the other one?
yes. this one is much thinner, smaller and can handle 100 lb less than the other. should be alot cheaper than $79 to justify the deal. like i said.

Just an update on this one...I was just about to jump on the Menards workbench, however it is showing unavailable with the text "Unfortunately, the vendor is unable to supply this item at this time. Please check back again in the future."
The dozen closest stores around me show ~10 in stock.

So even if they don't have any to ship, your local store probably has plenty in stock.

Am I wrong in thinking the use case for this is actually a lot smaller than one would think? Let me explain..

On paper the idea of a folding desk like this seems handy, but in reality I'm failing to see a common case (not saying there isn't a case for this, just saying it wouldn't be common).

Yes , it folds down, but in order to fold it up, essentially the floor space below it and around it (in order to actually use table) would have to be clear. If it's not clear, that means there's something in front of it when it's folded against the wall, so you'll have to move whatever that is out of the way to use the table.

So outside of having a particular object always sitting in front the table that you have to always move out and move back in when you use this desk (and outside of just visual "cleanliness" of having a table flat against a wall).. does this actually save any usable space?
I'll be using it as a desk in a bedroom. Folded 90% of the time. Unfolded it would block walking around the bed, but not an issue when working from home

Since the other is no longer available it's not really worth comparing. Maybe there was a better deal, like 1000's before. But this IS a slick deal.

You can buy those folding brackets for 20 bucks and a piece of precut pine for 10. It would probably take longer to find the bag of screws you know you have somewhere than it would build it.

was thinking about using this as a folding table in my laundry room
That's exactly what I did. I have a small galley type room between the garage. I used the 4 footer abd it has been exactly what I needed

I propped it up on a folding platform and boosted the height with a few of the styro blocks it shipped with until I got a satisfactory height, then drilled the pilot holes using the brackets as a guide.
I lifted it on my head. It didn't work well. Ended up ripping the top from the brackets so just used a couple thicker screws to put the base back on.

I got twoof the 48" ones just for the wood! I made a very nice stereo stand with them. I gave the brackets away.

So the brackets are 32 inches apart but the studs in my garage are 24 inches apart, not 16 inches. How am I supposed to mount this into both studs with the difference in distance between studs?

There are metal threaded inserts in the underside of the wood top, 32" apart

If you want to move the brackets, you would ether have to get new metal inserts, wood screws or bolts.

Any of the three would work, just depends on how handy you are.
