For those of you who don't know what this is:

This is a small travel router that connects to an ethernet port of an existing network, OR can be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network and used to create your own personal Wi-Fi network but this router uses a VPN to mask your traffic when used.

It can also be used on Visible to share a phone connection with multiple devices but you will be required to use a TTL hack to make it work.

There are a few ways, the one I use is:
1. Connect phone/laptop to captive login wifi.
2. Connect GL.iNet to power
3. Log in to GL.iNet web interace
4. Change GL.iNet router MAC address to the same as that of your phone/laptop.
5. Connect GL.Inet to hotel WiFi, and it'll work.

A big use for this is also when you have a hotel that charges for, and limits the number of devices that connect to wifi. This isn't as common in the US anymore, but still common internationally. Also, if you have a ton of electronics with you, having this would save you from having to reconfigure each device for the new SSID.

Side note, I have this and it works great, the VPN works well too.

Curious how this hides your IP from corp when outside?
If you set this up with a VPN, leave the VPN on by default, and then only connect your work devices through this router, the most your IT is going to see is that you're connected through a VPN. As long as that VPN endpoint is geographically close to where you live (or you use your home internet as a VPN), it will look like you're connected from home.

Where it gets complicated is when your employer also has a VPN that they force you to use to get on their network and a firewall that purposely blacklists other VPN endpoints.

Going through most corporate VPNs is slower than whale snot, so adding another to the mix just makes it worse. And if they restrict public VPNs all together, you're forced to use your home internet as a VPN endpoint.

A better alternative would be to leave your work laptop at home and remote into it as needed.

Yes the forums are helpful. Unfortunately, why would a person need to go to a forum for basic information unless basic info isnt available? I sent the question to their tech support and received 2 wrong answers. I looked on the support forums and found the first post you mentioned - I could not understand why I needed to query the connection for the mac address with a windows machine which I dont have. The second post if you notice is the one I posted to the support forum where I got a real answer.

My point is that if it is that difficult to get basic info, then it would be really hard to get complex info, and I gave up on them. This is just my experience, yours may be better.

I am not saying that this isnt worth it. Just warning people that you are pretty much on your own in terms of support, or you will have to post to the support forums for info and hope someone can provide you with answers. Dont expect their tech support to be helpful.
It sounds like this device isn't made for you.

Luckily, a majority of the home consumer market is targeted toward the experience you want.

Some brands to try: Netgear, TP-Link, Linksys.

I would avoid ASUS, as their interface can be daunting for users who like having a lot of settings available to them but don't actually like to read up on what they do.

Ah, I missed that the second post was yours - sorry. But here's the "official", non-forum version of the information that you got as a reply: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e..._wifi_mac/

I can definitely see how "you have to do some math to figure out the MAC address" isn't as straightforward as most vendors, who would either have it in a main admin page, or have one sticker with ALL the MACs listed.

I use mine with a Verizon USB modem. Plug it in and it automatically starts tethering. Also use it to connect to my home mikrotik router using WireGuard.

Bought one and returned it. Could not keep a consistent connection with the hotel wifi, so all my connected devices would have internet that dropped every few minutes. The devices didn't have the issue when connected directly to hotel wifi (this was in Mexico so they didn't jump to cellular). Really had high hopes for this but would pass at any price.

Is the VPN automatic for this? Just connecting to this router will always encrypt the data?

Once you enter your vpn info you can force all traffic through that vpn, it will not allow traffic outside of the tunnel. Another thing I havent seen mentioned is the ability to use zero tier and tailscale on it.

This is a good travel router, it worked great on my last trips, there were a few hotels which I had to connect my phone first then clone the MAC ID but other than that it worked smoothly. This replaced my old slate which I got pre-pandemic.

Serious question, if the hotel Wi-Fi is not great, how will you get Internet with this router? Aren't you connecting to the hotel Wi-Fi with this router anyways?
I am also curious about this.

That's what I use it for: My phone provides a "cable speed" connection when we're on the road (e.g. in an RV), and this router allows me and my family to have WiFi access to that connection without Verizon slowing the phone connection down to a crawl. (If you tether to your phone from your computer, Verizon will purposefully reduce your phone's connection speed by 99.9%.)

There are documents online that explain how to configure this device appropriately. You only have to do it once.
